I’m going to be all about the beachin’ in weeks to come (headed to Mexico with Nadine for a press trip, then Morgan’s wedding in San Diego, then – fingers crossed – some kind of sun/sand/happiness-related activity every weekend thereafter with Kendrick), so before departing the John Sahag Workshop I asked Doug how to protect my brand-new Keratin treatment from the ravages of salt water.
His advice: slather on a thick layer of conditioner before prancing around in the waves, and then rinse your hair with fresh water immediately afterwards. Good to know.
More summer hair care tips:
– Wash your hair as infrequently as you dare (I wash mine every three days or so; those with oily hair will probably need a shampooing more often).
– If you don’t want to/can’t apply conditioner before swimming, just wet your hair with fresh water; this makes your locks less likely to soak up damaging salt and chlorine.
– Use a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated to protect against UV damage. An alternative: make a DIY hair protectant by mixing 2 tsp sunscreen in a spray bottle with about a cup of water; apply to hair as often as you’d apply sunscreen to your body.
– Once a week, treat your hair with an intensive hydrating mask (I love Ojon, but you can also DIY in a pinch: just slather your hair with olive oil or honey, wrap in a warm, wet towel for 20 minutes or so, and shampoo out).
– Protect your scalp from sunburn by spraying a little sunscreen onto your part (use a clear spray for less mess).
