Want to see what I’d wear if I were getting married at a courthouse this very afternoon?
Something more or less like this. But maybe with a cream coat and blue pumps (Bhldn makes gorgeous ones).
Part of the fun of a courthouse wedding is the relaxed chic of it all, and somehow that just seems to go hand-in-hand with mod day dresses.

Ay, amazing.
My favorite way to spin a retro wedding outfit: pair a ’60s-inspired mini with a structured bag and swing coat. To keep the look sweet rather than saucy, go for a low heel and simple accessories.
Another popular take on retro wedding style: the ’50s tea-length dress, which is especially popular for courthouse weddings and is a nice way to get the drama of a big, poofy wedding gown without the fuss.
For affordable takes on this style, check out Stephanie James Couture – lots of gorgeous tea-length wedding gowns (like the ones pictured in the top photo) are available in a wide variety of sizes.
Three more ways to get the look:
And of course you don’t have to go retro – courthouse weddings are the perfect place to try something sleek, stylish, and even a little bit sexy (love those black-and-gold pumps pictured below).
Below are three takes on the look, but be warned: these are the dresses that you’ll want to spend a little more money on. When something is this simple, the fabric and tailoring will have to be top-quality for the piece to look Big Day-appropriate.
And finally, there’s no reason not to go big.
Want to wear a floor-length gown? Wear a floor-length gown. Or a three-piece suit. Or jeans and a t-shirt. After all, it’s your day.
These three options (which may just be my absolute favorites) have very little to do with each other, apart from being…well, kind of extraordinary.
That suit is to-die-for, that dress is Vivienne Westwood and under two hundred dollars, and that gown, paired with a cardigan and flats, is a great way to get your glamour fix while keeping things cool.
