How-To: Printed Skirt

Q. Hi Jordan,

I have a style question that I’m hoping you can help me with. I have a habit of buying skirts that I love in all shapes, prints, and colors…but then I never know what to pair them with. I usually resort to a solid t-shirt or tank top, which is fine, but is there a way to make them more interesting for both work and play?

Thanks so much!

A. You know, the thing about “interesting” pieces (by which I mean printed, colorful, or adventurously cut pieces like your collection of skirts), is that sometimes there’s a tendency to pair them with otherwise “safe” stuff: plain tees, simple shoes, minimal accessories, etc. I get it: when faced with a leopard pencil skirt, sometimes it’s easier to just grab that black button-down and be done with it.

But once you get over the mix-and-match hump, your closet options open up exponentially.

And getting dressed becomes so much fun.

Take, for example, this adorable polka-dot skirt from J.Crew. Sure, you could wear it with a white tee and a denim jacket for day, or with a solid-color tank and blazer for night…but how about a slouchy pink button-down for weekend, a shocking emerald blouse with contrast detailing for work…and a sort of Western-Rocker chick vibe for your sunday afternoon date?

See? Fun.
