Snowed in?
Us too.
Some suggestions for how to make today less about shoveling and more about eating awesome things and watching awesome things and making awesome things.
1. Make Easy (No-Bake) Oreo Truffles. All you need: Oreos, cream cheese and chocolate chips. Crush up a 16-oz package of cookies, mush in an 8-oz package of cream cheese, and roll the mixture into 1-inch balls. Dip the balls in melted chocolate, and set on wax paper to dry. (You can also add toppings such as coconut, crushed nuts and sprinkles if you happen to have any holdovers from Christmas cookie-making laying around.) Oh my god they’re so good.
2. Craft Your Own Snowglobes. Bring those flurries inside by whipping up some simple snowglobes. What you’ll need:
- Some small jars with sealing lids (Mason jars or jam jars work well)
- Liquid glycerin (to make the “snow” drift down more slowly)
- Distilled water (or just boil water and let it cool)
- Glitter or faux snow (available at craft stores)
- Some found objects (small toys and ornaments, branches, and pinecones all work well)
To make your snowglobe, use Krazy Glue to affix the object of your choice to the inside of the jar’s lid. Fill the jar with distilled water, then add a couple of drops of glycerin and a couple of spoonfuls of glitter or faux snow. Screw on the lid with the object attached, flip over, and wheeeee: snow.
3. Make Your Own Movie Theater. Create a cozy viewing space by laying a whole bunch of pillows on the living room floor (bonus points if you also use sheets and ladders to create a fort). Need winter-themed movie suggestions? At your service.
4. Make Biscuits. You know what tastes better than a hot biscuit on a cold day? NOTHING. And I’m fairly certain you already have everything you need sitting right there in your cupboard. (Recipe here.)
5. Star In Your Own Music Video. Obviously this is the most fun thing ever (above is one of the first ones I ever made, way back in 2010). If you want to get fancy, you can use a simple editing program like iMovie to cut together your masterpiece…but really, yourself (and theoretically your kids) dancing around to “I Like To Move It” is probably all the entertainment you’ll need.
P.S. My hero.
