Weekend Snapshots

This weekend was sort of a hang-around-and-be-cozy one.

Friday was Mom’s birthday, so I spent the afternoon cooking with Dad over at their place.

On the menu: Lemony Engagement Chicken (Mom’s favorite), Asparagus, Bacon & New Potato Salad (recipe coming up), and Lemon-Chocolate Birthday Cake (recipe coming up) with Homemade Lemon Curd (you guessed it…recipe coming up). The theme of the meal was…lemon. It was pretty perfect. And, as a bonus, easy!

(See how I slashed into the chicken’s legs? That’s so that they cook a tiny bit more than the rest of the bird.)

The cake was SO good – you’re going to want to make it immediately, upcoming birthday or no.

Saturday was Project Day: wait until you see what I whipped up for the dogs (I have a post with plenty of adorable shots geared up for later today or tomorrow).

Lucy, being a very worried-looking shih tzu, has trouble demonstrating anything along the spectrum of “joy” or “focused attention”…but trust me: she’s been in a state of (well-concealed) bliss ever since Saturday afternoon.

That night, we headed out to meet Kendrick’s cousin and her two friends. The original plan was to take them to dinner on the LES, but they wanted to try Republic, so Republic it was. When I asked for downtown sushi or Chinese recommendations via Twitter, though, these were some of the ones that you guys sent me:

Noodle Bar (LilLilyJ)

New Ashiya – $30/pp for 2 hours of sushi and sake bombs (uglynewyorker)

Cube 63 & Kuma Inn, both BYOB (snaptastic)

Galanga (ColleenLamb)

The Meatball Shop – “who needs sushi when you can have ice cream sandwiches for dessert?” (jkristopik)

I am SO EXCITED to try them out. Will report back.

And by the way, I’m always looking for recommendations for inexpensive, interesting restaurants that I should try – so if you have any more, would love to hear them!

The night ended with this sort of sorry excuse for a banana split. But that’s the thing about banana splits: they need be neither complex nor attractive in order to be delicious. This would have been improved slightly by the addition of a touch of Fluffernutter and a sprinkling of walnuts (and, sure, a cherry)…but let me assure you: it was quite delicious just like that.
