Your fashion sense is great and I was hoping you might do a post on stylish AND warm winter coats. I own a very warm down-filled puffer in basic black…but I’d love to find a daily-wear coat that’s a little more refined, with fun details in the print, color, and/or cut that keep it from looking too grown-up or stuffy.

A. My favorite styles this year are inspired by the ’70s, with oversized faux-fur collars, belts, toggle closures, and boxy boyfriend cuts. When it comes to warmth, of course you should look for a coat with a good lining, but if you end up choosing one without just make sure there’s plenty of room underneath to add layers.

A brave choice, to be sure, but ooh, so fabulous…and the faux fur options out there just keep getting cheaper and more extensive. I adore that faux fox from Asos up there in the center, but my favorite (actually my favorite on this entire page) is that egg-shaped tweed from TopShop on the right – it’s also sold in brown with a grey faux fur collar (yum).

On the more casual end of the spectrum are these styles, which would look incredible with the bellbottom jeans that are replacing skinnies as the go-to denim this year. Just make sure there’s some element that speaks to the Here and Now (like a funnel collar or an egg-shaped cut) to avoid the headed-to-a-costume-party effect. Or just wear leopard booties. Always good.

Menswear styles are some of my favorites – I think they look especially fashion-forward and chic. Unfortunately, they’re often unlined (so that they have a slouchy fit and don’t add too much bulk) and thus not the warmest picks, but they’re usually roomy enough to layer cozy things underneath. And, as a bonus, they look fabulous with big, chunky scarves and hats.
Because of the boxy fit and longer cut, I’d advise going for one of these only if you tend to dress yourself up (heels and such) more days than not; worn with things like sweatpants and Uggs, these styles can look schlubby.

The most classic of all the options here, you can’t go wrong with a beautifully cut buttoned-up coat in camel, navy, or red, but keep an eye out for interesting details like a swing shape, big toggle buttons, or a funnel-neck. If you want to go even more affordable, the toggle coat that Old Navy has right now is super cute (cuter than it looks on the site, even) – I especially like the grey one with red closures.
