We have a super-romantic Valentine’s Day planned this year. It involves a trip to San Francisco, dim lighting, music, and probably french fries.
That’s right, kids: it’s a four-year-old’s bowling-alley birthday party! Now, if we’re going to be totally honest, this sounds like a pretty spectacular Valentine’s Day to me. I mean, I really like bowling. And kids’ birthday parties (cupcakes! pizza! YES). And I can’t think of any people I’d rather spend the day with than Kendrick, Indy, Goldie, and some of our best friends, whose son we’ll be celebrating.
The truth is, I’ve never been big on all the pressure (and expense) associated with going out on a big, fancy date on that particular day; I would honestly rather just check out that nice new restaurant I’ve heard of on an evening when I can a) get a table, and b) not pay some crazy amount of money for a prix-fixe dinner that likely includes some form of kale. It’s more my speed to celebrate in little ways – a funny gift, a pretty notecard with a sweet message, a thematic dessert – that make it less about fuss, and more about fun.
Above are my Valentine’s Day gift picks from ModCloth’s Sweetheart Shop, which features adorable, retro-flavored finds in reds and pinks. (There’s also some really cute and nicely priced lingerie sets, if that’s on your – or your significant other’s – personal wish list this year.) My personal suggestion: pick up this cake plate, and make a crazy over-the-top decadent dessert (suggestions here) to set on it. Sweet, silly, and just a little over-the-top – the way Valentine’s Day should be.
