Here is a nice thing about having moved from Northern California to Southern: When you live in San Jose and roll into preschool drop-off looking like you just stepped straight out of Grey Gardens, people tend to look at you a little funny. In San Jose, I was definitely “the mom who wore pajamas and sunglasses the size of her head even in the rain.”
In LA? I’m just another mom.
The other day I dropped my daughter off at school wearing the striped pajamas you see here, a rainbow faux-fur coat (with pink Mongolian lambswool accents, naturally), studded leather sandals, and a white crossbody, and not only did I not get weird looks…I got COMPLIMENTS. Like, a lot of them.
And so, when I got home that afternoon, did I change? Obviously I did not; I stayed right there in those pajamas and got more compliments at pickup.
Now, I get that this particular pajamas-all-day life choice is somewhat confined to the WAHMs and SAHMs among us, but that doesn’t mean that a really great pair of pajamas isn’t a wardrobe necessity. Every single holiday season, I make it my personal goal to get some new ones (or a few new ones; you know, for sartorial variety). This year, The New PJs are both from Soma, and they are good. The much-commented-upon striped pair is from the Embraceable Sleep collection, and the black set (shorts, notched top, and robe) are from the Cool Nights collection, and both are the cozy and lightweight and wear-all-day-able stuff of pajama-obsessed dreams. (Oh! And they both come in short and long cuts in addition to regular – which is what I’m wearing – which is nice if you often find yourself dragging your cuffs or accidentally wearing cropped pants that were not intended to be such. Dragging cuffs and unintentional crops ruin the whole look.)
Soma is currently running a Semi-Annual sale with up to 70% off of their sleepwear collection (plus free shipping on orders over $100), so if you’re in need of a different kind of New Year’s Eve outfit – one that’s much more my speed than, say, heels – click here to check out all the lovely options.
