Cold Spring Day Trip

Hat Attack Hat; LAGOS Ring; Zara Blazer; Alexis Bittar Lucite Earrings; Ora Delphine Bucket Bag ℅

I've written about Cold Spring a whole bunch, but that's because every single time I go I'm reminded just how much I love it. It's just such a…gem. (I'm aware I sound like a grandma, but a gem is exactly what it is.) Cool little antique stores selling stuff you actually want to buy (albeit slightly overpriced, but you can always score a "Mystery Bag" for $5 if you're feeling adventurous), artisanal finds for the home, fun little shops for kids, and THE BEST STEAK SANDWICH ON THE PLANET (I mean that). And if you don't have a car, Cold Spring is just a little over an hour away from NYC via the Metronorth.

Bucket List III: Sleepy Hollow Halloween

My neck of the woods (which is right next door to Sleepy Hollow, which you might recall as the place where the Headless Horseman himself lived) does Halloween REALLY well. Like, transforming-a-corn-maze-into-the-scariest-haunted-house-ever well. And since this is our last season as residents of HalloweenLand, I figured we should probably do it right.

Bucket-listed!

I have a pretty low fear threshold at these live-action haunted house things, so I've developed a strategy for dealing with it when I really need, say, the lady with the bleeding eyes to get away from me RIGHT NOW. Did you know that if you act totally not-scared they look for someone more fun to freak out? It's true. So when I spot a creature on the horizon that I can't handle coming near me, I just immediately disengage and act all "whatever, I'm so totally over this" and there you go: Scary Thing has moved on to the person behind me (sorry, Diana).

Let’s Go Thrifting: Day Trips From NYC

Q. My boyfriend and I often take day trips to get out of the city, and want to do some thrifting to decorate our Brooklyn apartment. I thought I would ask for some outside-the-city thrift store recommendations, as you seem to have such amazing luck when it comes to well-priced finds!

Andrea

A. Before we even talk getting out of the city: you have to stop into the Salvation Army on 46th between 10th and 11th (where Kendrick and I picked up our first joint purchase ever). It's the rare city thrift store that charges for-real thrift-store prices - sure, the pieces will be more expensive than at, say, a rural tag sale, but they'll still be within the realm of reason. Another plus: the Salvation Army charges a flat delivery fee (last time I checked it was $50), so make sure to pick up as many items as you can in a single trip.

In The Blossoms

I don't sign up for e-mail lists.

I mean really: who does? You get so much junk mail anyway, there's no need to add more.

I do make one exception, though, and that is when I visit charming orchard-type places within an hour's drive of our home; of all the email lists that exist in the world, that's the one I definitely want to be on.

So when Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard - the North Salem, N.Y. farm that we visited for pumpkin-picking last fall - sent out an email blast saying "Come check out our Apple Blossom Hayride this weekend!" it got opened...

Two Fabulous Day Trip From NYC Suggestions

Q. Hi Jordan,

This question seems to fit your "former" life perfectly.  My husband and I are in our late twenties and live in the upper west side with our dog. We JUST realized that we have the day off this Monday, and we've made no plans.  Do you have any ideas for trips or day trips that would work - without a car, and possibly with a dog in tow?

-Katherine

A. Oh, yes. Kendrick and I are professional day-trippers; when we were living in the city I knew that moving out to the 'burbs would be a good idea for us mostly because every chance we got found us hopping a train, headed in the direction of a small town with cute restaurants and good antiquing.
