I really liked our brown velvet Pier One couch when we got it back in 2010. It was by far the nicest couch I’d owned up until that point – as in, the first couch I’d owned that was neither the very cheapest model sold at Ikea nor a hand-me-down.
Even though it was sorta saggy in the middle and didn’t even come close to fitting all of our family members on it for a rousing viewing of Bubble Guppies, I’ve always really liked the curvy shape and chocolate-brown color, so once we replaced it with our beloved Sofa Boat we did a little brainstorming about where else in the house it might be able to find a home.
We thought about putting it in the attic (which doubles as a guest room and a playroom), but couldn’t fit it up the stairs…and then we discovered: boom. It fit perfectly into the space under the picture window in our sunroom.
My plan was to create a cozy spot to sit with some coffee in the early mornings; I pictured snuggling up right there with a blanket and watching the snow come down in our backyard once winter rolled around.
That picture is kinda pretty, right? That’s what’s called “the magic of photography”. Trust me, it’s the pillow: three years into our ownership, the couch was not looking good.
This is what it really looked like (albeit from a less photogenic angle).
See, what happened was that it became Virgil’s favorite place to sit and panic about leaves and chipmunks, and sort of transformed into…if not a dog bed exactly, certainly not somewhere I’d be particularly interested in snuggling up with anything at all. Also, the sag somehow seemed much more pronounced in the smaller space, as you can see.
I love our sunroom – ever since we moved it’s been one of my favorite rooms in our house – and Saggy Dog Bed Couture didn’t exactly fit with my vision for the space.
I was planning on putting the couch on the “Free Stuff” list on Craigslist, but Kendrick really doesn’t like throwing things away generally and has an inexplicable soft spot for that piece of furniture specifically, and decided that it would make the perfect addition to his studio (click here to see the full garage-to-man-cave transformation).
Hey, fine by me! We gave it a little pre-move scrub…and I actually think it’s looks pretty great in there right next to our old coffee table.
Ten or so years from now, I suspect, this exact spot will be our son’s favorite place in the entire world. Video games and comic books and dartboards and shlubby old couches that boys can’t ruin are the ingredients for a seriously good rec room.
Anyway, I replaced the couch with a wrought-iron bistro table set I found on Joss & Main (an AMAZING flash sale site) for an excellent price…
And had an early-morning coffee right there just about an hour ago.
