A. Hi Jordan –
Ever since I became a mom, I’ve had such a hard time devoting time for myself in the shopping/fashion/beauty arena. Yet, in all of your photos, you are so stylin’! How do you find time to stay current on fashion with a little one?
I am looking for advice on how to stay stylish without spending a lot of time away from my toddler (who is not a fan of shopping anywhere but toy stores these days).
Thanks, Jordan. Merry Christmas!
Erin
A. What a nice thing to say! Thank you.
Honestly, though, the truth is that I wear more or less the same thing every single day. Seriously.
If you look at the posts since my son arrived, you’ll see a lot of the same pieces (like the bellbottom jeans in the post I put up yesterday) over and over and over…because while I still like to have fun with fashion, I just don’t have the time or energy to go through my entire closet when figuring out what to put on every day. It’s more about reaching for easy basics that I know I’ll feel good in, and then adding sort of grab-and-go accessories for interest.
Short answer: it’s all about accessories. And you don’t even need to spend a lot (try H&M for scarves, Forever 21 for jewelry, and TJ Maxx for vests, hats, and everything else. Speaking of TJ Maxx – they also sell toys and children’s books, so I usually pick up a small toy or book for my son and let him play with his new acquisition while I check out the rest of the store).

When life changes (such as becoming a new parent) require you to switch up your style a little, I think the easiest (and most cost-effective) way to approach your wardrobe is to figure out what kind of silhouette you feel best in (for me, that’s a slouchy, lightweight sweater or relaxed-fit tee and skinny jeans), make sure that you own a few key mix-and-match pieces, and then integrate eye-catching (but not necessarily expensive) extras like scarves, shoes, and earrings.

More Tips:
– For your key pieces, aim somewhere in between Forever 21 and Saks – you want quality basics that will hold their shape, but there’s no need to spend a fortune.
– You’ll save a ton of time getting ready in the morning if you toss or store away everything that doesn’t fit well, or that’s seen better days – the goal is to be able to just reach into your closet, grab whatever you spot first, and be good to go.
– Buy a great red lipstick and some gorgeous sunglasses (knock-offs work just fine). Nothing will make you feel more ‘done’ in five seconds flat, even on mornings when your little one gets you up extra-early.
Hope that helps!
