Springtime In A Basket

Years ago, I was wandering around down in SoHo, and came across a street vendor who sold the most incredible, over-the-top necklaces made with ceramic flowers and beads. At the time, I was more minimalistic in my jewelry tastes than I am today, but when I found out that her pieces – which looked exactly like the kind of things that would be under glass at Barney’s and selling for hundreds – were more in the fifty-dollar range…I had to.

This was the necklace. (For some reason, this is the only photo I could find of it, and it’s pretty hideously lit and semi-blurry…but it also includes Stephen Baldwin, which allows me to forgive its other failings. Stephen Baldwin!)

It was the kind of thing that I couldn’t wear if I was feeling antisocial, because everyone would stop me to talk about it. I actually remember several occasions when I started to put it on and then changed my mind, just because I was in a crappy mood and didn’t want to chat about my damn necklace all day.

It was also, sadly enough, packed into the costume jewelry box that was stolen from our apartment a couple of years ago.

But this necklace totally reminds me of my old one, in that it’s also Springtime In A Basket.
