This is the very first Christmas in my life that I’ll be hosting in my own home.
The past few years Kendrick and I have done a little solo celebrating on Christmas Eve (making dancing videos, watching Love Actually, and having coffee table picnics with champagne and Lemony Engagement Chicken), and then gone over to my parents’ place on Christmas Day…but this year, the whole holiday takes place Chez Us.
Before we moved, I anticipated feeling a little sad and nostalgic about being away from “home” on Christmas Day for the very first time…but I hadn’t realized how deeply and quickly this, right here where our son is growing up, would feel like home. I’m excited to set the presents under our own tree late at night, and I’m excited to see Indy’s face when he comes down in the morning (spoiler alert: we have a very loud talking Pooh Bear coming into our life in just a few days). And then I’m excited to have my parents come over to eat a Christmas dinner that I’m cooking myself.
In short: this holiday is really driving home for me how things have changed.
As an example, this is how we spent last Christmas Eve: parked on the floor of our bathroom, hand-washing dishes in the bathtub because our water had cut out and our super wasn’t answering his phone. (The truth, of course, is that it was actually kind of romantic and ridiculous and fun.)
But despite the fact that our previous apartments were less-than-ideal for hosting parties, we’ve always had people over a lot (that’s the aftermath of last year’s New Year’s Eve party, pictured above)…and I like to think we’ve actually become pretty good at small space entertaining.
