I Do Not Need These Things (And You Don’t, Either)
I spent the entirety of New Year's weekend living my very best life, by which I mean I watched all seven episodes of The Queen's Gambit while Marie Kondo-ing every inch of this house. You guys, my Tupperware is organized. WHAT. (Related: How is it that I have reached the age of nearly forty years old, and have only just realized that the tops of Tupperwares click together for easier storage?)
One of my favorite things about being single (and there are many, starting with shared custody that permits the aforementioned living of one's best life) is that I have total and complete control over what comes into this house, and what goes out of it. In non-toy-related categories, at least. K is a lot more sentimental about possessions than I am, so there was a constant push-pull over what could and couldn't be tossed. As an example, I do not keep my children's artwork. I keep *some* of it, sure - the really special pieces, to the tune of, say, ten per year per kid - but anyone who has ever had a preschooler knows that they regularly get sent home with foot-high stacks of "artwork" that mostly consists of paint splotches in varying shades of purplish-brown, which is the result you get when you're thinking less about color theory and more about mushing your brush into the paper as hard as possible.
Just 6 Things I’m Really Into
Floaty floral dresses. My daily uniform is obviously shorts and a t-shirt or button-down, as you've observed on 20,954 separate occasions, but I've been trying to mix it up a bit. Putting on one of these dresses just makes you feel so pretty. The one pictured above (worn for a baby shower brunch several centuries ago, in February) is an old Zara dress I stole from my mama, but I just ordered this on-sale beauty for another option.
Lore Podcast. Ommmg this podcast is so good. Each episode covers a bite-sized bit of global folklore - alien sightings, pukwudgies (! it's a thing), vampire tales, and so forth - and explores its historical underpinnings. I listen to it on walks with Archie, and because I cannot get enough of it, Archie is a verrrrry tired pup these days. Side benefit: Tired pups eat fewer of their mother's favorite bras. Not none of her bras, but fewer. Here's a rundown of fans' favorite episodes, if you want some really good ones to get started with.
The Willy Wonka Candyland Rainbow Surprise Cake
My daughter likes candy. Like, a LOT.
Here, as an example, is a photograph of her trick-or-treating at 2 years old. That's what you call "laser focus."
The 10 Products You Loved The Most In 2019
OK, so I'm not really a "shopping" site, per se. Which means when I recommend something, it's almost always because I REALLY SERIOUSLY need you to know about it. (IN ALL CAPS.) But I wasn't sure what to expect when I checked my 2019 affiliate link analytics to see which products were actually the most popular. Would y'all have actually...you know...listened to me?
Ohhhh, you listened. You really listened.
A Holiday Bottle Spell For Your BFFs
Tarot contributor Jessica creates a spell for you and your best friends to celebrate each other and remind you that grand, lifelong love comes in all forms.
Three ladies, glasses raised, dancing together…You don’t need me to tell you that there’s a party going on here. The Three of Cups is a picture of celebration, of communion. This is a card about sharing joy with friends.
Let’s go a little bit deeper. Cups are the suit of emotion, and in Tarot, groups of three represent a firm foundation. So the friends we see in this card aren’t just casual acquaintances; they’re your squad. They’re the friends who empower you to be your best self. And they’re the friends who are with you even when you’re maybe being…not totally your best self.
The holiday season is full of celebrations - one might even say "overfull." There are work parties. There are family get-togethers. If you’re a parent, you may be looking at a calendar stuffed with classroom parties and choir concerts and dance recitals. These communal gatherings can be delightful, but they can also be draining. There’s a big difference between compulsory socializing and reconnecting with soul friends. The Three of Cups wants you to make time to spend with people who fill your cup rather than drain it.
Links & Love & Stuff
There's still a few days left to enter to win the print of your choice from Thirty9, which offers a selection of fine art photography that you can browse by theme, color, room, and so on. (I'm obsessed with the agave plant print pictured above.)
Speaking of plants: You may have noticed that I changed my palms. RG's home page header now features a piece by Ariane Moshayedi (all her work is gorgeous; you should check it out).
What's better than wine? Wine...with poetry. Verse & Vine's wines are sourced in Paso Robles and Monterey, and come complete with ambience right there on the bottle.
Four Perfect (And Affordable) Basics Your Fall Wardrobe Absolutely Needs
This is not an ad for Everlane. But it might as well be.
A few years ago, when Everlane first launched, they did a little blogger-seeding, and I ended up on the receiving end of one of their leather tote bags and a black turtleneck. The pieces were good - very good, even - but they never made the leap into constant rotation for me, and even though I poked around on Everlane's site from time to time, this tank top is the only piece I ever bought from them.
It's not that I didn't like Everlane's stuff - I am all about great basics, and am super on board with their ethos - but even given my generally positive experiences with the brand, I never really trusted that their direct-to-consumer (and thus surprisingly affordable) prices could come along with truly top-tier quality across the board. As an example, I didn't feel like the sold-out-everywhere Petra tote that I owned (and ended up giving to a friend) would be one of those leather items that ends up looking even better over time; I thought it might be more of a flash-in-the-pan thing.
