Our Home Editor, Audrey, is moving to Texas! Sad for me, excellent for RG…because now she’ll have a whole new house for us to tour. Before she goes, let’s look at her favorite decor moment in the house: Her four-year-old’s warm, modern bedroom.
Before we pack up and move to Texas, here’s a farewell tour of our favorite bedroom in the house: Huxley’s room! When the house was built in 1926, this was the original primary bedroom. In 1986, the previous owners converted it into a library when they added a second story and moved the primary bedroom upstairs. When we bought the house last year, we removed the back wall of built-in shelves to make room for Huxley’s bed so that the space would feel more like a bedroom.
When designing this space, I started with the wall color. I fell in love with Oakmoss from Sherwin Williams, and we’re actually going to paint Huxley’s Texas room the same color! From there, I chose the Malta Hand-Knotted Jute rug from Serena & Lily, which brought in some pattern and texture. I’m a big fan of choosing the largest rug possible for kids’ rooms to maximize the soft play space on the floor. For this room, we went with the 9×12 size, which also provides ample protection for our hardwood floors.
Once it was time for us to move Huxley into a bigger bed, we chose a simple charcoal frame with railings to accent the darker tones in the rug. Given that there was pattern in the rug, we chose solid white bedding. If you haven’t heard of Beddy’s bedding before, let me be the first to introduce you to the most kid-friendly bedding in all the land. Beddy’s offers one-piece bedding sets that zip-up, making it super easy for kids to make their own beds. And although white bedding seems unconventional for a kids room, the material is extremely durable and bleachable! [Ed note: NEED THESE.]
We accented the bed and Huxley’s built-in bench with a combination of leather and decorative pillows. Many of the décor pieces came from Huxley’s Texas-inspired nursery, including the lamp, faux cactus, and planter. We used a mix of books, toys, and baskets to fill the built-in shelves in his room, and it has been so nice having a place to store the countless books that inevitably accumulate when you have kids.
The room has a total of seven windows, five skylights, a built-in reading nook, and two full walls of built-in storage. It was so much fun designing this space, and I definitely feel sad saying goodbye to this awesome room. Fingers majorly crossed that Huxley is too young to realize that his new room is going to be a far cry from this one!
