Friday afternoon, I met Daily Beast contributor Karen at Republic, in Union Square, for a little white wine and gossip. This was my first time meeting Karen – she’s usually based in New Delhi – and she is both fantastic and fascinating.
Republic is one of my top go-to restaurants for an inexpensive, (usually) quick, delicious meal: the sauteed pork dumplings pictured above were just $4 (!), and plentiful enough for a light lunch. What they’re best-known for, though, are their noodle dishes, which you can order with broth or without (I recommend with). And…dah dah dahhh!…they’ve just added banh mi ($7) to the menu, which means that I will be back. Soon.
Post-Republic, we took a stroll through the Union Square Greenmarket, where I picked up some gorgeous heirlooms, corn, and radishes. Add some chicken thighs and red potatoes, and you have a delicious, fresh-from-the-farmstand dinner for just around $15.
