When I prep for an interview, basically what I do is establish my “talking points” (the major ideas I want to get across; they’re sometimes provided to you by the interviewer or producer in advance) and jot down a few “sound bites”. Sound bites are essentially snappy sentences or phrases that get your point across succinctly and with a bit of panache – they’re what producers are usually looking to snag from longer interviews or speeches, so it’s nice to have a few prepared (why not make their job a little easier?).
For example, rather than saying, “You know, it’s probably really tough on Jennifer Aniston, because, you know, she always dates guys and then they go on and usually they end up dating other people who they end up marrying or having kids with,” you say something like “Jennifer Aniston’s never ‘The One’…she’s always ‘the one before The One.'” (Not that this is my particular belief – I think there’s something a lot more complicated going on with Jennifer Aniston, and hate the idea of passing judgment on her – but you get what I mean.)
Just a little interviewing FYI. Also, I need more coffee.
