Everyone in this family has an unfortunate Sugarfish habit.
When I was about thirteen, I announced to my family that I was a vegetarian. I’m pretty sure I gave them a song and dance about loving animals, cows are our friends, etc etc, but really: I was mostly just trying to be irritating, because thirteen.
A few weeks ago, my ten-year-old announced that he is a vegetarian, and shan’t be consuming meat anymore. “No meat at all?” I inquired.
“None,” he said.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because I love animals,” he said. (And also “I am at the precise age where I start being a pain the butt and enjoying the prospect of making my mother’s life more difficult.” Perhaps that last part remained unspoken, but it was most definitely there.)
“So you know, honey, sushi isn’t vegetarian,” I said.
…And, just like that, he became a pescatarian. Which, you know, fine – healthy, etc – but also like 50% of my recipe repertoire include meat, including personal favorites such as chicken thighs, pot roast, or (literally) killer steak (please click on that last link; you will not be disappointed). I’m on board with reducing meat consumption in our house (which will be a necessity, because mama ain’t making different meals for different family members), but I’m just not super well-versed in vegetarian and seafood recipes. (Not to mention that seafood, if purchased sustainably, is seriously not cheap.)
Leaving a few pescatarian-friendly recipes of my own below, but I’d love to hear your favorites! Help a girl with a pain-in-the-butt preteen out?
