In Which I Go Full Digital Detox

As of tomorrow, I will be doing a thing that I have not done in a solid decade: I will be going offline. Not for a day here and a day there - that, I've done, albeit with much reluctance and even then only because of catastrophic cell phone service. Nope, this time it's for more than a week.

And I won't even be able to break rank and load up Instagram in a moment of weakness, because the place where I'm going requires you to turn in all electronics upon arrival.

About that place: it's in Northern California, in the woods, but I'm not going to say exactly where I'm going - largely because the place emphasizes anonymity and such, but also because it feels like a good idea on a personal level. I learned about it in the wake of this wildly melodramatic moment, when a couple of people - wholly independently - reached out to me to suggest giving it a try. During that not-so-long-ago time, I found myself in a place where I knew I needed help, and finally realized that the methods I'd been using to cope were really just that: things that were helping me "get by." They weren't helping me get better.

Dressing Room Try-On: Madewell Fall 2019

Alright, folks, apparently we have a new feature: The Dressing Room Try-On. I spontaneously did one of these at Everlane the other day, and it seems you guys were into it, hooray! ...But honestly? I think I was into it even more. It just felt like a throwback old-school blogging - you know, the kind I've been all nostalgic about lately - where everything isn't glittery and perfect and staged. It's just fun.

(I had fun.)

Madewell is one of those brands that I forget I love until I go into one of their stores, and then find myself wanting everything. Alas, it's also priced slightly above my "Everything" budget, so I had to keep the actual purchase to One Of The Things (scroll down to see which one I went for), but still: It was all so good.

Portobello Pearls: A Quietly Stunning Collection by Kim Butan

My dear friend Kim of Cloth & Stone Photography - whose beautiful work you've seen on this site - is up there in the top five most stylish people I've met. She's just effortless - the kind of woman who can throw on a pair of sneakers and a button-down and look like a laid-back Jackie O circa 2019, just popped out for a quick stroll through the farmer's market. Something I noticed about Kim virtually within minutes of meeting her: She always has the most perfect jewelry on. The pieces she chooses are without fail simultaneously subtle and eye-catching - as in, you notice them, but what you notice even more is how she wears them. They always somehow seem like a part of her.

Kim's had a secret project in the works for awhile now, and I'm so excited to be able to share it here: She's curated her first collection of carefully-selected vintage earrings, and each and every piece has that same quiet-yet-stunning quality that Kim brings to her personal style. The collection sold out almost entirely within 24 hours - but the pieces pictured here are still available (for now), so if you see anything you like, message Kim @clothandstonestudiophoto to enquire.

...And if you miss out on these? Don't worry: there are more collections to come.

Five Things Becoming A Mother Taught Me About My Body

I've been writing Ramshackle Glam for nearly ten whole years - which means that there's a lot of good stuff hanging out in my archives. So each Friday, we'll be doing a little throwback to one of my personal favorites. This week, I got sick - like, really sick, with a kidney infection (treat those UTIs, kids) that left me more or less unable to get out of my bed for a couple of days. And whenever I get shut down by some physical malady or another - something that thankfully doesn't happen too often - I start thinking about how I treat my body. Which, if we're being honest, isn't especially well. And never has been.

A Crappy Eater’s 100% Honest Review Of Daily Harvest

Use code RE-AAKRHE6 for $25 off

Fine, I admit it: I started ordering Daily Harvest mostly because a lady I saw in their Instagram ads looked so adorably thrilled with her life. But I also started ordering Daily Harvest because I tried a chocolate-based smoothie at a fancy smoothie place near my dance studio, and became obsessed with chocolate-based smoothies. Except chocolate-based smoothies that you buy at fancy smoothie places are like ten bucks, and I have better things to spend ten bucks on. Like three jumbo-sized bags of salt and vinegar potato chips.

My attention to nutritional value, in case you were curious, starts and stops with the question of whether or not existing solely on hastily-consumed discarded spoonfuls of (Annie's! Organic!) macaroni and cheese will eventually kill me. (I'm pretty sure it won't. Jury's still out.)

Four Perfect (And Affordable) Basics Your Fall Wardrobe Absolutely Needs

This is not an ad for Everlane. But it might as well be.

A few years ago, when Everlane first launched, they did a little blogger-seeding, and I ended up on the receiving end of one of their leather tote bags and a black turtleneck. The pieces were good - very good, even - but they never made the leap into constant rotation for me, and even though I poked around on Everlane's site from time to time, this tank top is the only piece I ever bought from them.

It's not that I didn't like Everlane's stuff - I am all about great basics, and am super on board with their ethos - but even given my generally positive experiences with the brand, I never really trusted that their direct-to-consumer (and thus surprisingly affordable) prices could come along with truly top-tier quality across the board. As an example, I didn't feel like the sold-out-everywhere Petra tote that I owned (and ended up giving to a friend) would be one of those leather items that ends up looking even better over time; I thought it might be more of a flash-in-the-pan thing.

Shame On You

Yujiro Tada

I've been writing Ramshackle Glam for nearly ten whole years - which means that there is a LOT of good stuff hanging out in my archives. So each Friday, we'll be doing a little throwback to one of my personal favorites. This week, I got to thinking about sex and shame. I've recently rejoined the world of dating, and am finding that the rules have changed - a lot. Ghosting, breadcrumbing, the tendency towards extreme flakiness that comes along with the virtually limitless number of options (that are right! there! at your fingertips!) presented by dating apps. These are all brand-new to someone whose last experience being single transpired during the MySpace area.

One thing that hasn't changed, as far as I can tell: The shame that women so often feel when confronted with their sexual history, regardless of where it lies along the spectrum of human experiences.
