Two Fresh Makeup Looks For Spring (As Modeled By Cara Delevingne Because Why Not)

cara delevingne makeup smoky eye pale lip

Springtime = an excellent time for a makeup refresher.

What I love about the two looks below: they're on opposite ends of the spectrum - one is all smoky and sultry, and the other is light and rosy - but both are so fresh-looking, and so easy, and so great for the change of season...and I happen to have the perfect perfect perfect product recommendations for both of 'em, because they're both looks I do a lot myself.

So: let's talk makeup.

Life, From A Little Lower Down

A few days after my daughter was born, I was sitting outside by the pool with her, watching the light filtering down through the trees and listening to the sounds of Kendrick and Indy playing in the water, and I suddenly thought to myself how much I wanted her to remember that exact moment, even though I knew she never would. And so I set down my phone next to her head, pointed up towards the clouds and the trees and the scarf I'd draped across the top of her carrier, and I recorded a video. Just a few seconds of light and sound and sky, just so she could see what life looked like to her way back when.

Every so often, Indy will pick up my camera, and start taking photo after photo after photo, and I have this kneejerk impulse to stop him - no honey, you might break it, careful not to fill up the memory card, please don't mess around with mommy's things - and then I realize: wait.

How beautiful, to have this record of what life is like through his eyes.

My Looks

April Showers Bring…Overalls

I've always had a thing for overalls, but it's more of a thing in theory than an actual thing. It's just so damn hard to find a pair that looks like...you know, like you're intentionally wearing overalls as opposed to "oops I was painting my house and forgot to change before coming over for dinner." I have this one pair from ninth grade that I drag out every once in awhile, put on, and then usually take right off again because they sort of look like I made a mistake.

Yesterday's rain made me grumpy, but you know what made me less grumpy? The arrival at my home of the most perfect overalls everrrr. These are slim-fitting but not super-tight, are a little '70s without feeling costume-y, and have slightly cropped legs that help out enormously when you're confronted with those April showers (no wet hems, hooray!). They make quite the springtime uniform, I think.

Oh, and you know where I picked up the rest of the outfit, which completely coincidentally happens to be the same brand as the overalls? At the Rebecca Minkoff sample sale that's happening over on Fifth Avenue right now. (Seriously, it's a total coincidence; I wasn't trying to do Minkoff From Head To Toe, it just happened.) I try to make it every year, because it is so good - and a great place to pick up spectacular Christmas presents at a spectacular price. You can find sample bags and shoes for fifty bucks (!), and about halfway through the run of the sale they do huge markdowns. Just FYI. (You should go.)

Links & Love & Stuff

Look at this awesome package of San Francisco-themed loveliness that arrived from my friends at ShopStyle! It smells like HEAVEN ON TOAST, mostly I think because of that candle.

When I was a teenager it was all about Coach and Kate Spade, and I've been really fascinated by the changes that both brands have made in the years since - basically, they upped their price point and their cache and et cetera et cetera and basically elevated themselves out of the appealing-to-tweens market. Which makes this article about Michael Kors bags and the rabid desire for them from the 13-year-old set super interesting. (via The Cut)

Recipes

Heirloom Tomato, Cucumber & Avocado Salad

Yay for easy, pretty salads that taste as good as they look.

This is the kind of dish that is all about the ingredients, so they really do have to be as good as you can get - and right now we're heading into prime farmer's market season...so: get them now. And then get them again next week. And then get them over and over until fall rolls around and you can no longer get them.

I probably make this salad with 90% off my spring and summertime meals; it's that good. (And it takes thirty seconds to make, which is nice, too.)

A Garden Party to Celebrate (And Say Good-Bye)

This weekend's party was beautiful to look at, but even more beautiful to be at.

You know, ever since I was a little girl I've gotten a bit teary every time a party comes to a close: once the food is eaten and the drinks are drunk and the candles are burning down and everyone’s gone and it’s just me and Kendrick puttering around, picking up discarded glasses and plates and wiping down countertops and floors, I look around and think wait.

Come back.

Major Restorative Moment: The New Nexxus Salon in TriBeCa

nexxus salon new york

Talk about a not-terrible way to spend an evening.

You may have noticed I’m a little hair-obsessed lately; I just love this new cut so much, and am especially excited about the fact that (so far, at least) it appears that if I keep my hair healthy I don’t really have to do a whole lot to it on a day-to-day basis (which is AWESOME, because hello: no time). So when given the opportunity to take a little field trip down to the Nexxus Salon in TriBeCa for a restorative hair treatment and styling…I mean:

Yes.
