Major Makeover: How I Turned A Tiny, Unused Bonus Room Into The Most Efficient Space In Our House

Now THIS is the one I've been waiting to show you. When we first started looking for a new home, I knew that I wanted some kind of office space/playroom adjacent to the living area, so that the whole family can still hang out together when we're all doing different things. And the house we ended up in did have a (very) small bonus room, but it didn't open onto the living room, and felt stuffy and oddly proportioned, so it basically ended up becoming a receptacle room for all the stuff we didn't know what else to do with.

A trash dump, in other words.

Not ideal.

Journey To The Valley

One of Kendrick's best friends from business school has been staying with us for the past week, and so this weekend we figured we'd show him one of our favorite places (definitely in Northern California, and very possibly in the world). Mill Valley is the town that I visited with Morgan way back when I was about three months pregnant, and we ate pasta on a sunny terrace, and on the drive back of the bridge to Morgan's place I called Kendrick and told him that I was totally on board with him looking for a job in the Bay Area. I think what I said is "We have to live in Mill Valley one day."

As it turned out, we have neither the five trillion dollars (in cash, plz and thanks) required to purchase property in Marin, nor the desire to have Kendrick spend four hours a day commuting to and from the South Bay. Love it for a day trip (and for some maybe-way-in-the-future-post-lottery-winning fantastizing), though.

Style

Understated

I'm in the mood for neutrals. (Well, I always am. But especially now.)

And so: allow me to present my top 10 Neutral Zone picks for your fall wardrobe (click on the images below for where to buy).

1. The (very) oversize white button-down (I have the one pictured above, and it's cut to be oversized - you can order your actual size for a loose, boxy fit).

Family’s Night Out

See that?

That is the HAPPIEST BABY IN THE WORLD.

I mean, our daughter's always a bit of a grinner, but last night both she and Indy had what might have been the time of their lives. We met our friends and their friends (who are now our friends) - all of whom have multiple kids, so we had a pack of about eight of them - for live music at a place called Jack Rose (technically a bar, but the most family-friendly one ever), and it was the BEST. For all involved.

My Looks

Fall For Cozy Clothing

I think we can all agree that back-to-school clothing (and I will always think of fall clothing as “back-to-school” clothing, regardless of my age) is pretty obviously the best. Tank tops and shorts are nice and all, but cozy hats and chunky sweaters and and BOOTS?

Better.

And a nice thing about Northern California is that we actually get to experience a little taste of that whole school’s-back-in-session vibe. Sure, we don't have the amazing foliage that everyone gets all atwitter about on the East Coast, but we have, you know...a slight chill in the air. (Or at least we do when you leave the immediate vicinity of our house, which is located in the baking-hot South Bay, and head thirty minutes in any direction, where temperatures drop twenty degrees and the fog rolls in. Which is really all the excuse I need to do a little autumn shopping.)

Lifestyle

Links & Love & Stuff

Exaggerating zero when I say that this chandelier (which is HUUUUUGE and RIDICULOUSLY cool-looking) has completely made our living room. If you have a space that needs a style kick and are looking to invest a little $ (but actually a very reasonable amount for a light fixture, because those things can get crazy-pricey), highly recommend this one.

Joey Fatone's Letter To One Direction: 'Everything Is About To Be Terrible' (via Above Average) is HYSTERICAL. (Also it's not real. It was more fun when I thought it was, but that's okay: still hysterical.)

To all my friends with whom I tried to schedule drinks pre-New York departure (and all my friends generally): I am Vermont’s heroin epidemic multiplied by Bill Cosby. (Let's Get Drinks, via The New Yorker.)

Lifestyle

Bourbon & Fir

Meet my new favorite fragrance.

For years and years I wore Bond No. 9's Nuits de Noho exclusively - it was my "thing" - and then I went all rogue and started playing with rose perfumes and scents I found at Renaissance Faires and such. I love the idea of having a "signature" fragrance, but since I don't know how to track down Robin Hood to make him sell me more Gemini oil, I've been looking for something really different and special. Something I love.

Found it.

The “It” Bags

| via PopSugar |

According to PopSugar (and fashion bloggers, generally) the Chloe Drew bag is the "It" bag this fall. It's very pretty. I can't afford it. And even if I could, what I suspect fits inside it is, like, a tweezer and a credit card, as opposed to the thirty-pound assortment of diapers/wipes/bottles/toy cars/Red Bulls that I drag with me everywhere I go.

(I also suspect that I'm not exactly who that particular item is marketed to. I think it's marketed to that girl with the wedge shoes pictured above. You know, the one who has so much money to spend on Chloe Drew bags that placing shoes on white sheets seems like a fine idea. (I'm joking; I totally do that too. Because white sheets make the best backdrop and bloggers be crazy.))
