Soft Makeup For Day To Night

I'm very much a default-mode person when it comes to my everyday makeup: I go for the same brushes, the same shadow colors, the same liner, the same gloss. Just because...it's easy, I suppose. I love playing with makeup, but I also usually have fifteen minutes to get out the door, so I generally just stick with what I know works.

A few days ago, though, I shot an extremely cool collaboration with a beauty brand I've been a major fan of for years (I'll share as soon as I'm allowed; so excited), and the looks we put together (not pictured here) were very out-of-the-box for me. And taking a moment to play reminded me: oh. I like experimenting with makeup.

The Mama Uniform

Last time I visited Morgan in San Francisco I brought heels, because I had a mental blip.

This time? Nope. Because what we do when we're here is sprint around after three children, go to aquariums and play spaces and science museums, push strollers up and down very steep hills, run around in sandboxes, and kick balls in fields. Heels aren't especially helpful for any of those things.

But that doesn't mean that I want to be shlumpy. And so what I brought with me are several variations on my Mama Uniform.

Of all the clothing "categories" - black-tie, business casual, date night, whatever - my absolute favorite is this one: the outfit that you actually put on in the morning when what lies ahead of you is a day of running around. And last night Morgan asked me if I could put together a look for her that works for "real" life as a mom, but still looks pulled-together and reasonably fashionable. In other words: comfortable, practical, cute. In that order.

Test-Run: Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy Lips

Oh, adorable.

I'm obsessed with Vaseline's new Rosy Lips shade, which has been available in the U.K. for years but is only now arriving in the U.S. It feels like the old standby, but adds a tiny hint of color and flavor to your lips (sort of like Smith's Rosebud Salve, another favorite of mine) and comes in the cutest little (very little) container.

It's still pretty tough to find online in its U.S. incarnation (the British version comes in a tin) - I couldn't find it, at least - but it's starting to pop up at drugstores around the country, so if you manage to get your hands on one, let me know!

Combat Boots For Now And Later

I really love combat boots.

Mostly because they remind me of seventh grade, when I switched from a uniform-requiring private school on the Upper West Side to a non-uniform-requiring one on the Upper East Side, and got very, very excited about the concept that I was allowed to wear whatever I wanted.

I remember my old combat boots vividly: my friend Harley and I bought matching pairs (along with matching baby-doll tees and matching mini-backpacks, of course) at a discount store in the East 70s, and I wore them just about every day right up until the point when the laces frayed and the soles started to separate. Which wasn't long after I bought them, because they were extremely cheap. But that was OK, because once My So-Called Life went off the air the expiration date on combat boots arrived pretty quickly.

I am so excited that they're back. And I think they may be back to stay this time around, because they've moved beyond a trend into the world of classics...and also, they're just so fun to wear. They're great with pretty much everything for fall - I especially like them with '90s-ish floral dresses, skinny jeans and muscle tees, and shorts with lightweight sweaters or long-sleeved tees (for balance).

Saddle Shoes And Turning Tides

When I was in fifth grade, I went to a private school that required students to wear uniforms: the boys wore slacks and collared shirts, and the girls wore little belted pale-blue jumpers. The popular girls wore the jumpers beltless, layering them over white or navy turtlenecks that were bunched at the neck (never rolled). I went for button-down blouses with enormous, frilly collars and tied that belt on exactly where it was supposed to go.

I was not cool.

I took a strange sort of pride in my non-coolness, actually. I remember at one point all the girls deciding to wear their scrunchies around their ankles, and making a conscious decision to keep my scrunchie in my hair where it belonged (despite my best friend's urgings) because it seemed pointless and weird to stick the thing on my foot. My choice to buck that particular trend made me feel pretty good, actually...in a small way it felt like a sign that I was doing my own thing, and that "my own thing" might be a kind of awesome thing to do.

And then, in the spring of that year, everyone (by which I mean Sarah and Nell and Katie and the other girls I wanted very badly to be just like) started wearing saddle shoes. I loved them. I wanted a pair of my own. But I felt silly about the fact that I wanted them; it seemed embarrassing to even desire the pair of shoes that was so clearly what the cool kids were into. I worried that it would seem like I was wearing them just to fit in, or that "fitting in" was actually what I did want.
