Easy Greens

Reason Number 2,457,244 why Trader Joe's is the best thing that has ever happened to life, ever: they have beautiful fresh flower arrangements that are actually affordable, and also seem to be preternaturally long-lasting. Which is wonderful, because spending twenty bucks on a grocery-store bouquet that falls to pieces within 24 hours is both the worst and something I tend to not do (because it literally feels like ripping up a twenty-dollar bill and throwing it out of my car window). And while the idea of being one of those people who trots off to the florist for some lovely fresh blooms has its appeal...I mean, lol.

But I do a lot of entertaining, and also take a lot of photographs of said entertaining, and I've discovered that having a few fresh flowers laying around is kind of huge in terms of making your table (and home, generally) feel lovely and fresh and inviting. And they're really useful for adding texture and color to images, if you too are a table-photographer (see this post for evidence).

The Answer To “Why?” (And Other Things I Learned From Mom)

Black and white mother daughter photo

{ Mom and Me (photo by Indy) | Los Gatos, CA | August 2015 }

I write so much, every single day of my life, that it's not often that I find myself at a loss for words. Spoken words, sure - I'm like the Jedi GrandMaster of saying exactly what I seriously did not mean (and then turning red)  - but with the written word I'm usually pretty good and getting across whatever point it is I'm trying to make. But when SheKnows asked me to write a post about "the greatest lesson my mom has ever taught me" I sat there at my keyboard for awhile staring at the blinkblinkblink of the cursor for way longer than I'm used to - because...I don't know, that's seems a huge proclamation to make. It feels like putting a finger on what's wonderful and special and enormous about my relationship with my mom, and I think everyone knows that the mother/daughter relationship defies those kinds of easy answers.

When I talk about my mother to people who don't know her, I refer to her as an angel, and as hokey as that sounds, I mean it. She is an actual angel; a person who wanders through the world shedding light and good intentions and support for others wherever she goes. It'd be easy to describe the way she sees the world as "childlike" - she routinely answers the question "Why?" with "Why not?" and cares exactly zero about "age-appropriateness" (ugh) or what other people think about her; she just wants to do the things that make her feel good and happy and alive, and so she does. But she also happens to be a badass lawyer, so "childlike" doesn't really apply here. Like, at all.

Now That’s Adulting

Yesterday I decided to take my son to the dentist for the first time: an act that was actually less of a "decision" than an "order" - the kindergarten he'll be enrolling at in the fall (TEAR) makes you fill out forms stating that your child is up-to-date on his vaccinations, has been to the dentist, et cetera. And he's four and a half now, so it seemed like a good time to make that first dentist trip anyway. But I was pretty nervous, because...well, I don't know, aren't dentists just kind of terrifying to everyone? Even thirty-four-year-old me gets all agitated about the thought of that horrifying little scythe-thing that they use that makes a horrible sound against your teeth and leaves your gums all bloody (if, like me, you are the kind of person who replies to the question "Do you floss daily?" with "Of course I do!" and are totally lying).

The Spring Blanket Collection

Hey there, Virgil.

Floral Stripes & Arrows Blanket }

You know that t-shirt that you love more than any other t-shirt because it's simultaneously lightweight and cozy, and is equal parts cool-looking and comfortable? The blankets that we sell over on glam | camp are that t-shirt, except in blanket form. (I think I've told you this about ten thousand times now, but that's because it bears repeating: they are seriously THE BEST.)

Five Things: Cait Weiss, Former Burlesque ‘Stage Kitten’ and Present-Day Poet and New Orleans Aficionado

Black and white lineup of burlesque dancers

Kendrick has a huge, huge thing for New Orleans, and looked like he was going to cry when I explained to him that adding a stop in the city to our cross-country road trip last summer was going to mean many, many extra hours in the car with our children. Like, too many. But in exchange for his flexibility on this point, I promised him that we'll make a trip there in the near future - which is a promise I'm fully okay with making, because last time I went (years and years ago, with my dad), there were oyster shooters and lots and lots of those romantic hanging trees that you see everywhere in the south, and both of those things are things that I enjoy very much.

So in preparation for this trip that we will one day go on - and because some of you might also be interested in some tips on what to do in the area - I thought I'd ask a friend who's something of an expert on the area, Cait Weiss, about her five local must-dos. Cait is a former burlesque "stage kitten" (who wrote a hell of an article on the subject) and present-day poet (you can find recent examples of her work here and here), and her suggestions have me wanting to hop a plane and go drink Sazeracs while sitting on a carousel. Like, today. (I also asked her to give me five burlesque-related must-haves, and her suggestions include the most amazing lightbulbs ever and boob tape. Love.)

The Attractive Decongestant

P.S. Ten points if you can spot the random hanging octopus doubling as bathroom decor.

P.P.S. I love the title of this post, but I want to be clear right from the start that it does not refer to Brie herself. She is indeed attractive, but (as far as I know) does not herself possess anti-congestive properties.

Springtime Wardrobe Update: The Perfect (And Perfectly Invisible) Bra

Waco's Basic Beauty Bra under a white button-down

My favorite part of this outfit may surprise you

I don’t always mind having my undergarments showing (see this post, for example, in which my bra isn’t just “showing,” but is a full-on part of my outfit)…except when I do. Some tops – thin summer t-shirts, tailored button-downs, et cetera – just require a bra that’s both supportive and completely seamless. And this kind of a bra (especially if you’re as picky as I am about such things) isn’t always especially easy to find.
