Every once in awhile, you need a good Girls Day Out.
Where Francesca, Goldie and I went for our first just-us-three day (of many, many more to come, since Francesca lives in Los Angeles and, in a few months, will be just a car ride – albeit a rather long one – away from us): to The Village Social in Mount Kisco for a late lunch and to TJ Maxx for obnoxiously bright sweaters, and then for a walk in the woods because there aren’t many days like this left in 2014.
Whenever I hang out with Francesca I’m inspired to dress…well, better. Or at least simpler. Even when we’re just laying around the house, she’s always so effortless and lovely that it makes me want to embrace a similarly less-is-more mentality. And these kinds of easy, timeless pieces – a white knit turtleneck, black jeans, a great felt hat – are actually what I’ve been gravitating towards for a few months now; when life is extra-busy, it’s nice to have things that you can just pull out of your closet and know will look good wherever the day takes you.
But because I can’t go too simple, now, lest someone see me and get all confused and think I’ve been replaced by Toned-Down Alien Jordan: I had to add fringe moccasins and insane fringed (and beaded and be-furred) mittens to the aforementioned simple turtleneck and jeans.
Because it was cold out? Of course not. Because they are INSANE FRINGED (AND BEADED AND BE-FURRED) MITTENS. I wore them for a shoot in Boston a few weeks ago…and am now wearing them everywhere in the world, not-especially-freezing weather outside be damned.
(Tell me they’re not the coolest things you’ve ever seen.)
Anyway, this is all a nice little analogy for why I love Francesca so much: she inspires me to do better, be better than I think I can be (did you know that she was the one who forced me – and I mean forced me – to finally sit down and write a book? It’s true) and helps me remember that it’s okay to just relax and be myself…but also takes one look at the crazy mittens that I am using to completely ruin a perfectly lovely, simple outfit and says, “Oh, do it. Why not.”
That’s a good kind of friend to have.
