Holy oatcakes, is it ever hot out. I am one of those horrid, ungrateful people who whines my way through winter (“I just want to stay indoors it’s too coooooooold”) and then gets all dramatic about things like hundred-degree heat (“I just want to stay indoors it’s too miiiiiiiiserable” – see a theme?). Anyways, one of the few things that will drag me away from my A/C on even the hottest of days is a pool. Love pools. Had one in LA; loved it. Not so much an ocean girl – I have a thing about seeing my feet and do not enjoy ocean-related murkiness – but pools? Pools, I love.
Manhattan Plaza Health Club‘s pool, which is open to the public M-F through Labor Day (and every day during the non-heatstroke months) is up there in the “unbeatable” realm. For $35, you get all-day access to the pool (which is enormous, and pretty, and has a jacuzzi and attractive foliage and cute lifeguards), as well as the health club (including the fantastic dance classes), the steam room, and the outdoor sun deck. MPHC is also where I learned to swim when I was three years old (I attended Manhattan Plaza’s pre-school, and one of the lovely benefits of the school is that they start tossing city kids into the water on floaty wings at a wonderfully early age. I may be scared of grass – I am; it’s embarrassing; we’ll discuss – but I am not particularly scared of water, and for this I credit MPHC).
I go to MPHC ’cause my parents are members and lob guest passes my way, but there are lots of pay-to-play and free pools around the NYC area; go HERE for a rundown.
