Thanks to Samantha Bee, The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, and the Richard Simmons podcast I have officially turned into the kind of person who wanders around all day with headphones on (a.k.a. a teenager). (The fact that they’re rose gold makes me feel like that’s okay.)
Just bought a pair of these off of TheRealReal and I’m not entirely sure this was a good idea. They’re really small. And blue.
OK, so have any of you tried on The Meghan Markle Shirt (you know, the Misha Noonoo Boyfriend shirt that Meghan wore during her first public outing with Prince Harry, thereby setting of an International panic for…a white button-down shirt)? Is it really that good? I need to know.
Du Is Tak? is a children’s book written in a completely made-up language, and is charming and makes you think and all four of us want to read it together every single night, which is saying something. Those of you with kids (approximately preschool-grade 3) need to own this, pleeeeeease.
My parents-in-law bought me a handheld electric masher for Christmas. Honestly, I didn’t expect to use it very much at all – I don’t make mashed potatoes much, and besides, can’t you just use, like, a fork…? – but I’ve found myself pulling it out several times a week. It comes in handy for everything. (And looks like a vibrator, which makes me giggle every time I use it because I’m five.)
I’m not a huge “personality test” person, but this one is fun. (How Does Your Personality Impact Your Life, via Personality Factors.)
I scored an advance copy of Patricia Heaton’s new cookbook, which comes out February 6. All you need to know is that it contains a recipe for homemade pop tarts, and I am making them TONIGHT. (Actually excited about a lot of the recipes – they’re simple and homey but have a sense of humor, which I always like.)
I’ve written before about the cult product Yu-Be, which is apparently the number one skincare product in Japan, and which I’ve been using off and on for years) – a thick, glycerin-like moisturizer that absorbs into skin almost instantly. For those of you looking for product like this, but wish it was unscented as well as camphor- and paraben-free, here you go!
If you donate $34 to MoveOn.org (the largest digitally-connected progressive organizing group in the U.S.), they’ll send you a yard sign that sends a powerful message (I just ordered mine). If you want to donate sans yard sign, click here.
In the car on the way to a meeting at the Time building last week, I somehow managed to catapult my cup of coffee into the air (I’m serious: it catapulted. I have no idea how I did this, but it resulted in coffee on my butt, on my jacket, on the car window, and in the row behind me. How??) I was a little bummed about my jacket, because getting a stain out of black-and-white fabric without discoloring the pattern seems tough, but you know who’s handy to have in the car with you when you stain your black-and-white jacket? The Official Clorox Laundry Expert, Dr. Laundry (this is a real thing). She was sitting right beside me, so I asked her what to do. “That’s no big deal,” she told me. “Just sprinkle on a little Clorox II – it’ll get rid of the stains without affecting the color.” …Oh.
“If there is a shutdown, I think it would be a tremendously negative mark on the president of the United States.” Ding ding ding! (Video of Donald Trump in 2011 via NowThisPolitics.)
This is insane and fascinating and makes me question everything I see. (Video: I Made My Shed The #1 Restaurant In London, via Vice.)
Anxiety during and after pregnancy is a topic I’ve personally struggled with (and written about) a great deal, and I wish I’d had Rebecca Fox Starr’s new book – Beyond the Baby Blues: Anxiety and Depression During and After Pregnancy – way back when.
I was browsing around on Rejuvenation the other day and gasped and pointed to the screen. “Kendrick!,” I said. “Look at those sconces! I’ve always wanted those sconces!” His response: “You’ve…always wanted…a sconce? …What is a sconce?” What they are is perfect, obviously (and assuming you are not Kendrick and know what a sconce is, you should really check them all out; Rejuvenation is the place to go for these).
We just got the first senator who will be giving birth during her term serving. I would say “cool,” but WTF. (Tammy Duckworth Is Pregnant; Will Be First Senator To Give Birth, via Chicago SunTimes.)
Big thanks to Feedspot for including me in this Top 50 Mom Blogs list! Really interesting to see the others on it (and exciting to see a few friends :).
I’m a pasty beast at this time of year, and yet still find myself in bathing-suit-wearing situations relatively often. I’ve played around with various self-tanners over the years and have settled on this cream for the face and this mousse for the body (both fast-drying, non-sticky, and inexpensive), but would love to hear your recommendations if you have any.
My cat is so weird. (And for those of you who asked me over IG: That’s a Tile around his neck. We love him and we want to keep him, and our creatures are notorious escape artists.)
I lost my very favorite black silk blouse (which you’ve seen in wayyyyyyy too many posts to count). It was from NYDJ, but the style has been discontinued. I am sad. I think this one looks sorta similar, but if you’ve found a super lightweight, silky button down with a loose fit…lmk?
Yet another reason to book a flight to France ASAP. (How A Crazy Old French Woman Cured My Chronic Pain – And Healed My Soul, via Lenny.)
I use a jade roller on my face nightly while watching TV. It allegedly helps boost circulation and assist with lymphatic drainage, and I’ll take all the depuffery I can get. Also, it feels so good.
I remember so many times watching my mom – a partner in her law firm – making coffee and cleaning up the office kitchen because, as she said, “no one else would do it.” Rage. (I Refuse To Be The Office Mom, via Lenny.)
Speaking of my mom: I sent Jane Fonda’s TED talk to her, and she loved it as much as I did. (Video: Life’s Third Act, via Ted.com.)
I love grocery shopping, and don’t trust anyone to pick out fresh produce for me, so I’ve resisted grocery delivery services for years. But friend Erin recommended Instacart – which lets you order from a variety of local stores, including Safeway and Whole Foods, usually gets your order to you within an hour or two, and lets you waive the service fee and add a tip for your delivery person – and it changed my life. It also keeps giving me a popup saying that friends I refer can get $10 off with code JReid25C173, soooo there you go. (Apparently I also get $10 if you do this, so Ben & Jerry’s on me!)
I just think this photo is funny.
