I have complicated feelings about name changes; I changed my last name to Kendrick’s when we got married, but often wish I hadn’t…mostly because I’m not exactly sure why I did. I think the answer is “because I wanted our children to have the same last name as both of us,” but I also would like them to have my name. And yet, for various reasons (none of which really make sense to me), this doesn’t feel like an option. And that doesn’t seem right. This article, about a couple’s decision to use the mother’s last name for their child and just how nuts it seemed to make everybody, is FASCINATING. “Language is never small. Language shapes how we view things before we even know we are viewing them. How we name something determines how we value it. If women’s last names are consistently absent from history, never passed down, then where is their—our—value?“
