I spent my last night in NYC at the most gorgeous rooftop dinner celebrating Pier 1’s summer collection. It was fun because of the company (including Grace of The Stripe, Kat of With Love From Kat, and Megan of Wit and Whimsy), because of the food – the dinner was catered by Seamus Mullen – and because I’m in the process of some patio redecorating and am in need of inspiration. Some picks I’m personally considering – including an LED solar flamingo, helloooooo – below. (And PS get free shipping with code FREESHIP.)
ShopBop is having a massive surprise sale of up to 40% off on select items. Said items include inflatable swans and a reaaaaaally pretty (albeit oddly-shaped) bikini. And this completely bizarre thing, which wins the prize for the ugliest piece of clothing I’ve seen in a long, long time.
In this interview on Gugu Guru (a site that creates unique registries based on your personal style), I talk about the constant semi-disaster that is attempting to manage the work/life balance, why the best part of my job is also the worst part of my job, and the scariest (and coolest) thing about working for yourself.
Amanda Peet wrote a GREAT article about aging and appearance and shame and the things we do (and won’t do) to try to stop ourselves from getting – or at least looking – older. (Never Crossing The Botox Rubicon, via Lenny Letter.)
Kendrick and I have been getting super into our coffee lately – buying fancy cold brew stuff at Whole Foods and such – and I’m kind of into the idea of trying out one of those coffee subscription services. Nomad Coffee Club sends single origin specialty coffees from all over the world straight to your home or office every month, along with the story behind the coffee and its tasting notes.
You’ve heard everyone on the Internet freaking out over that woman who wrote a book (and a NY Post article) about how she thinks that non-parents should get their own version of maternity leave? Plenty of posts have been written about the luuuuudicrous assertion that maternity leave can in any way be equated to “me time,” but it’s also important to remember that this silly kerfuffle is distracting us from the real issues…like the fact that the maternity (and paternity) leave situation (not to mention the daycare situation) in our country is seriously broken, and needs fixing. (Maternity Leave Is Not “Me” Time, via Scary Mommy.)
This crystal arrowhead necklace has a kind of Santa Fe-goes-glam vibe. I’m into it.
Above: the spot in Erin’s place where I spent several days last week parked with my computer doing book stuff. It is the coolest room ever, and I would like to own those chairs. (This dining set from Overstock is similar and pretty well-priced.)
If you haven’t seen this clip of Jimmy Fallon describing his favorite memory of Prince yet, you seriously have to (watch it all the way to the end, please).
Compelling article on the (often silent) struggles of women struggling with fertility challenges. (Why I’m Finally Speaking Up About My Pregnancy Struggles, via Cosmopolitan.)
I have resisted the call of dressing my daughter and me in identical outfits so as to avoid being That Mom. These bathing suits (grown-up version; baby version) broke me.
“From knitting crazes to mindfulness training centers, Americans today will take anything they can get to escape the hum of their perceived hyper-connectivity and overwork.” Super-interesting read on what the coloring book craze tells us about the state of mental health in America. (America’s Obsession with Adult Coloring Books Is A Cry For Help, via QZ.)
I need to get back to Joshua Tree ASAP. (Transporting Trips You Can Do In A Weekend From Los Angeles, via Lonny.)
This article on the misery that is trying to figure out how to get your children to sleep tells all those helpful advice-givers with their helpful tips and tricks to shut it…which is kind of refreshing and awesome. (Sleep-Deprived Parents: There’s Hope, But It’s Not What You Think, via ScaryMommy.)
Oh hi. Here I am in St. Louis on five hours of sleep, drinking coffee and holding an iPhone case designed by a Project Runway All-Stars winner because it makes me feel fancy and when I’m tired feeling fancy is nice. St. Louis dining recs, anyone?
