I stopped into the press preview for Lindsay Lohan’s new 6126 spring handbag collection with mixed expectations. I like her leggings (+1). It was in the Ace Hotel, so picklebacks were in close proximity (+10). And I am rooting for the girl, despite everything that’s going on with her at the moment. But still…she’s had some pretty disastrous forays into the fashion world lately (oh, Ungaro).
But the Spring 2011 collection? Is decent, and occasionally moves into the realm of pretty good. Everything’s priced under $200, which is nice. A few of the pieces veer dangerously into Ed Hardy territory (blue leopard-print overlaid with lace detailing and such – oh, nonono), but the collection is so wide-ranging that those few missteps can slide by. It’s so wide-ranging, in fact, that it’s almost confusing: I’m not entirely sure what overall look Lindsay (or whoever actually designed the line) was going for, as the collection includes everything from patterned fanny packs to silvery clutches to work-appropriate purses and travel totes…but there’s certainly something for everyone. And when you’re talking mass-market appeal…well, I guess that’s the goal, right?
The collection is still in the works, so all the pieces I viewed were demos (apologies for these photos – the purses are much prettier than they look here, but the viewing was in a very dim room, and I could not get my camera to work it out), but even so, I did really like the two bags pictured above. The black bag is an unexpected rectangle shape (longer than it looks in this shot) and perfect for work; it would even fit a laptop, and the finish is nicer than you’d expect at that price. The pink bag was my favorite in the collection: it’s completely retro and fun…almost reminiscent of a ’50s bowling bag. And if you look closely at the latter item, you can see the neatest little detail: the line avoids big logos (whew) in favor of something cooler and a bit more subtle: each zipper pull has a sweet little number charm (6, 1, 2, and 6, naturally).
