Stodgy Is Sexy / At-Home Manicure Money-Saver

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Stodgy Is Sexy for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Stodgyadjective

1. Heavy, dull or uninteresting; 2. Tediously commonplace, boring.

So stodgy = not such a good thing, right? Wrong. In recent years, as the economy has fallen into a seemingly never-ending abyss, flashiness in any form has become…well…sort of unattractive.

Responsibility? Fiscal awareness? Sensible spending? Now that’s sexy.

I’ve never been a mindless spender, but in recent years, I’ve made countless small changes that have had an enormous impact on my sense of financial stability: everything from repurposing out-of-season clothes using a few little style tricks to setting up an automatic weekly transfer from my checking account to my savings account. I also love this little trick, courtesy of my friend Andrea.

Adding a little DIY wherever possible is my favorite way to save cash, and savings from doing at-home beauty treatments can really add up. Manicures, for example, run $15-$30 (plus tips) in New York City, making a once-weekly habit amount to nearly a thousand dollars a year. I haven’t gotten a salon manicure in at least four years, and I haven’t missed them for a second – I even think my at-home manis last longer than the ones I get in salons. Witness:

In line with this concept comes “Stodgy is Sexy,” an original documentary series and interactive web project that explores this unique movement through blog posts, user discussions, and video. Each installment of the web series provides a brief portrait of an individual who embodies the stodgy/sexy trend, and users can upload their own content to the site or nominate and vote on potential interviewees for future webisodes. Check it all out here.
