I love the idea of collections.
When I was a little girl, I randomly collected spoons (mostly because my dad traveled a lot for work and always brought me a souvenir spoon from wherever he’d been) and little porcelain animals that I stored in a glass-front cabinet. Nowadays, my collections are of the (sliiiightly) more practical sort:
I pick up vintage teacups whenever I find one that’s particularly beautiful.
I tend to immediately own any and all crystal skulls that I happen to stumble upon.
Leopard-print anything? Collected.
And cake plates.
I know, this may be a little perplexing considering that I don’t particularly enjoy cake and definitely do not enjoy cake-making…but it makes perfect sense, I promise – because not only are cake plates super-pretty and the kind of thing that you can find in styles ranging from retro (the Jadeite cake plate pictured above, which is featured in my eBay collection “Let Them Eat Cake,” is virtually identical to the one I found years ago at a thrift store in Ohio and that remains one of my favorite finds ever) to Victorian to modern, but also because they can be used in tons and tons of fun ways all over the home.
For example!
– As centerpieces for the table (top them with some seasonal decorations or fresh fruit);
– As stands for pillar candles (especially pretty if you place a few cake plates and candles of varying heights in an unused fireplace);
– On a vanity, to display jewelry and perfume bottles.
Practical, see?
(…Sort of?)
