So far, our week in Maine has been fantastic. We’ve made turtle sand-pies at the beach, hung out at the pool, eaten way too many lobster rolls and steamed clams, and slept until after 8AM (!) each day thanks to the fact that we’re all staying in the same hotel room, which means that our son basically stands up in his crib staring at us until around 10PM, when he finally decides that the party is over and it’s time to lay down. Late-to-bed doesn’t necessarily equate to late-to-rise with toddlers…but between the heat and the ocean air and THE SEAGULLS (each and every sighting results in enthusiastic-bordering-on-frantic pointing), all of us are sleeping a little longer and a little more deeply than usual.
It’s a little tricky, this staying-in-the-same-room thing. We haven’t done it since we moved – a day that coincided exactly with the very first day that our son slept through the night – and it means that we more or less hold ourselves to our son’s schedule. I certainly don’t mind this; I’m on vacation to sleep and to read Stephen King books, not to hit the clurrrb…but the fact that we’re limited to doing fun stuff during the hours when he’s awake also means that we don’t want to spend a single second more than necessary in the room getting ready.
Which translates to keeping things simple.
I’ve been wearing bathing suits from sunup to sundown, and just throwing whatever I require to be semi-respectable (like this asymmetrical Ann Taylor sweater and cutoffs) on top before heading somewhere to eat lobster rolls. So many lobster rolls.
Vacation beauty routines are always streamlined, so I brought just a few must-have products with me:
– Simple Skincare Protecting Light Moisturizer SPF 15 (applied first thing every morning in keeping with my Simple Sense results, which advised me to use a moisturizer with SPF all the time, not only when I’m planning on being outside);
– Clinique Almost Lipstick in Luscious Honey (the perfect almost-nude with a hint of sheer watermelon);
– Maybelline Volum Express “The Falsies” Waterproof Mascara (not amazing, but less runny in the heat than my favorite Dior mascara);
– Sephora Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner (because even when I’m keeping things simple, the liquid liner stays_;
– Simple Skincare Eye Makeup Remover (to get off every trace of that waterproof liner – and it really does);
– And Simple Skincare Radiance Cleansing Wipes (pictured above, to gently and thoroughly remove beachy residue from my skin before bed without waking my son by turning on the tap.) They’re the best for travel.
