Every year, there’s that fork in the road.
You know the one: one day you’re in pretty dresses, cozy jackets, and knee-high boots, playing with the idea of winter rather than actually living it…and then the next day everything goes to hell, temperature-wise, and it takes every ounce of willpower you have to get yourself out of that nice, warm shower and streaking across your freezing-cold floorboards. Forget about looking cute: days that cold are for crisis management and anything that can be put on your body while still buried under the covers.
It’s the days before that turn that are my favorites, clothing-wise. Rediscovering all your long-sleeved tops, knit scarves and tights still feels like an adventure, and there’s just so much stuff you can wear. Those summer dresses look great with tights, shorts (so long as they’re in heavier fabrics and neutral colors) are fantastic paired with flat boots, and the layering!
So much fun.
Look 1
I bought this pink-and-white dress as maternity wear over the summer, and ended up wearing it constantly. Loose, as a sorta glamorous housedress, or tied at the waist with a rope belt and paired with everything from metallic flats to platform heels and jackets. Here, I did a vaguely walk-of-shame-esque look, with a big, boyfriend-style army jacket and the perfect pair of hunter-green rainboots.
Related: why do hunter-green rainboots (these are from Geox) seem to go with everything? Because they totally do. Hm.
Look 2
You’ve seen me in various iterations of this look…oh, way too much. It really is time for me to pick up a new pair of black shorts, because I’ve owned those for going on three years now, and items purchased for ten bucks at Forever 21 should probably be retired after a couple of seasons. But they just fit so well, I can’t give them up.
To the shorts, I added the coziest flannel ever and a scarf stolen from Kendrick’s closet (I actually bought it for him to wear in the photos for the release of the Harlem Shakes’ album titled Technicolor Health, because…technicolor), and fabulous patent-leather knee-high boots that are a great option for rainy days when you want to look a little dressier (but I like ’em best with the most casual of outfits. On sunny days. Because why not?).
Look 3
Awhile back, I went on and on about how much I love ’70s-style faux-fur jackets…and so I had to own one. Fortunately, this one was from TJ Maxx and cost less than a dinner for two (in New York City, anyway). White tank with black bra (for a little extra sass, you know…and also because I forgot to change my bra when I changed into a white top), and some sturdy, sexy brown motorcycle-type boots, and that’s my weekend outfit, right there.
