How-To: Smudging Ceremony

This is me, performing a smudging ceremony on Saturday morning in between episodes of Dora The Explorer, which I now love almost as much as Yo Gabba Gabba. Almost.

A smudging ceremony, in a nutshell, is a way to cleanse a space of negativity; it traditionally symbolizes new beginnings and is done when a house is in need of a “spiritual cleansing”…so, say, when you move into a new place, or if something bad transpires between the walls, and you want to send the memory packing.

HOW-TO: SMUDGING CEREMONY

1. Light the “smudge stick” (usually sage, although mine was white sage and lavender).

2. Starting at the main doorway to your home, move in a clockwise direction through the entire space and gently wave the smoke through the air, paying particular attention to corners, the tops of walls, door frames, window frames. I use my hands and blow gently on the smoke to direct it into the areas that I feel are particularly important.

3. You can also perform a smudging ceremony to cleanse yourself; if this is your goal, gather the smoke with your hands and draw it towards your body, paying special attention to areas of stress or imbalance.
