When it comes to china, mix-and-match is my favorite look.
Why?
Because it’s casually glamorous, adaptable (just switch out key pieces to take your tabletop into different seasons or to dress it up or down), and, most of all, fun: instead of just heading over to your local mall and picking up a full set, going for the mix-and-match look lets you collect over time, incorporating pieces that really mean something to you.
And if something breaks? Big deal. You’ll just mix in something else.
So I love mixing and matching. We know this.
More than that, though, I love this particular style of mixing and matching – by which I mean the romantic, feminine, but still sophisticated look pictured here.
HOW-TO: ROMANTIC, BOHO MIX-AND-MATCH TABLESCAPE:
– Start with large plates in a simple palette with a touch of glitz to it, like the gold-rimmed white pieces pictured here (Rochelle Gold)
– Mix in smaller-sized plates in a floral pattern (bonus points if they also have a metallic rim; these are Hertford).
– Incorporate unique, gorgeous “extras” (cream-and-sugar sets, serving platters, etc) that contain some of the basic elements of your “primary” pieces (in this case, floral patterns and metallic details).
– For your glassware, go for cut crystal, but don’t be afraid to mix metals (even though I went primarily for gold here, I also incorporated the Noritake Vendome Platinum champagne glasses that you saw in this post).
– Don’t worry too much about a full matched set of silverware: I mean, seriously, who has one of those? I certainly don’t: our set is a mish-mosh of pieces from Kendrick’s parents, my parents, our college dorm rooms, discount stores, and the occasional knife or fork left behind by our various roommates. Doesn’t matter a bit.
– Finally, add personal touches (I mixed in my DIY Blue Mason Jar Hanging Lanterns filled with some dried lavender and the antique oversized Jadeite salt-and-pepper shakers that Kendrick gave me a couple of Christmases ago).
