This is probably my favorite view in our house.
When we first painted our formerly-blue living room in Valspar’s Warm Summer (click here for the before-and-after), I planned to extend the paint all the way up the stairway, thinking that the lemon yellow would clash with the robin’s-egg blue.
But once we got around to actually painting that spot, I realized…I like it. A lot.
Would I go for that kind of contrast in, say, a bedroom? Not necessarily. But in an entryway, I think it totally works.
Speaking of entryways, please look at this one (which belongs to interior designer Kelly Wearstler).
Is that not amazing?! It’s so amazing, in fact, that last time Francesca was over she and I stared at that photo for awhile…then at my foyer…and then back at the photo…and thought…maybe? And then we realized: pink graffiti walls might be a little much, even for me.
But still:

Here’s another jaw-dropping Kelly Wearstler entryway, just because.
Entryways are just such a perfect spot to play with color and contrast, even if you’re nervous about the whole bold-color-choice thing generally. Why?
1) Since you don’t spend a ton of time in them, you’re not likely to get sick of your choice;
2) High-impact first impressions are so much fun; and
3) If you end up not liking what you went for, hey: it’s not like you painted your whole house hot pink (or whatever). It’s an easy fix.
And if you’re still wary of giving big color a go, consider this: Valspar offers a Love Your Color Guarantee, which means that if you don’t love the color after you apply it, they’ll give you another one…on them. You don’t even have to return the original paint: you just buy a new color at any Lowe’s, take a photo of your wall showing both colors, send in a rebate request, and boom.
