Hmm.
Not sure I’m in a spot to be handing out instructions on how to make baby hats, as this was my first one…and beyond that, I’m not certain I did it right, since the instructions were for a Baby Hat rather than a Mystical Elfin Pointy Thing.
But as it turns out, it totally looks sort of like a cute hat. Or at least it looks cute on Lucy (who is approximately baby-sized and – sadly enough for her – therefore my go-to model for figuring out how big things I make should be).

P.S. While I appreciate the be-tutu-ed dogs I see walking down the street and think it’s A-OK if that’s what you’re into, I’m usually a “dog-outfits-are-for-warmth-purposes-only” kinda person. But…but…I mean…it’s a rainbow knit baby hat. On Lucy. I thought you needed to see that.
Anyway, if you’ve got a baby shower coming up, hand-knit hats obviously make fantastic, personal gifts. I started with these basic instructions, but noticed they were incomplete (they ended with the hat still…flat, and not hat-like at all, as noted in the comments under the post). So follow those steps, but then add these:
– Cast off the last row. Snip the thread, leaving at least 12 inches.
– Fold the cast-off edge in half and use a darning needle and the thread you left dangling to sew the edges together, creating a triangle like the one you see above.
– Turn the hat inside-out and use the needle to poke the remaining thread through what is now the top point of the hat. Leave it dangling for now – you’ll use it to affix the pom-pom in a minute.
– Follow these instructions for making a pom-pom, being sure to wrap the cardboard circle bunches of times to avoid creating a sad little bald specimen like mine.
– Tie the pom-pom to the loose thread hanging from the point of the hat, and you’re done!
