Wear It Wherever

Potato chips: the accessory that never goes out of style.

One of my most constant refrains, when it comes to clothing: “It’s super cute. I have nowhere to wear it.” And it’s true: jeans and t-shirts just make more sense for a job that mostly involves sitting in front of a computer, and a life that involves children who run really, really fast, mostly in the direction of things that they shouldn’t run towards, like the edges of cliffs and such.

Francesca is my friend who shows me otherwise, which makes shopping with her really, really fun. Take the gold midi dress I’m wearing here: we spotted it in a vintage shop in Berkeley a couple of months ago. I tried it on, and said: “It’s super cute. I have nowhere to wear it.” But she insisted that I should just throw it on whenever I’d usually throw on jeans: for hanging out at home with friends, for brunch, for whatever. I said that it wasn’t a shape I ever, ever wear – fitted midi dresses are like a perfect storm of not-me-ness. She said it was chic and I needed to get over not wearing fitted things. I said I wanted to shorten it. She said I was not allowed to.

Ugh.

But I trust her, and so I bought it. And?

I wear it all the time. I throw it on over a bathing suit before we sit down to dinner on Saturday evenings. I wear it out to brunch. Sometimes I even wear it to the beach, so I get to match the sand. I’m unprecious about it, and so it doesn’t just sit there in my closet all pretty and sparkly: it gets worn, and makes me feel chic and “oh this old thing?” every time. Unpreciousness about clothing is a policy that I’ve subscribed to in the past, and I’ve found it’s a kind of great one – I just need to be reminded every once in awhile.

These shots were taken on yesterday’s trip to Hidden Treasures, a vintage store in Topanga Canyon that might actually be the coolest vintage store in the world. I did not buy anything, because there was a sign on the door that said “Unmonitored Children Will Be Given To The Goblin King” and I thought it best to try to keep a handle on them rather than try on slipdresses, but that’s okay: next time.

P.S. Speaking of slipdresses, while hunting around for a dress similar to the one I’m wearing here I came across this gold one, and I loooooove the idea of wearing this everywhere (mostly to places where gold slipdresses don’t belong).

(Fun fact: that blouse was $2, discovered during a trip we took to the Salvation Army in Hell’s Kitchen ten million years ago.)
