The day before Thanksgiving, my cousin Tina made a ham dish (pictured above) so fantastic that I had to try to recreate it myself. Immediately. As in, I arrived home around 11AM, and by noon I was at the grocery store picking up ingredients for last night’s dinner.
What I bought:
– Partially cooked ham (about 7 lbs)
– Ginger ale (not diet)
– Brown sugar
– Coarse mustard
And that’s really all you need.
1. First, place your ham in a large roasting dish and score the top in a crosshatch pattern. Pour over about 1 cup of ginger ale (again, not diet).
2. Cover the ham with foil and cook according to package directions (generally, about 20 minutes per pound at 325F).
3. 20 minutes or so before the ham is ready to come out of the oven, make a glaze out of 1/2 cup coarse brown mustard and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Remove foil, and pour glaze over the ham.
4. Continue cooking uncovered for the remaining 20 minutes.
I had no idea how to slice a bone-in ham (next time I’ll go for boneless), so I ended up just sort of hacking it into pieces and returning it to the pan (the pan juices thickened up slightly over the next hour, turning into a kind of sauce, which was nice).
Above, Ginger Ale & Brown Sugar ham served with mashed new potatoes and roasted asparagus.
