My Favorite Fall Trends: A Top 10 List, In No Particular Order

via

I’m officially ready for fall to commence. It’s still hovering in the high 90s out here, but every day lately I wake up, open my closet, and gaze upon my lovely OTK (and thigh-high) boots, awaiting the day when I can throw them on with a big old sweater dress.

What I like about the trends I’ve been seeing for Fall 2017 is that they seem so wearable, even for someone like me, whose lifestyle rarely, if ever, involves going anywhere fancier than Aqui’s for Sangria Swirls (hush, they’re delicious). Sure, there are trends that I will not be embracing, such as uber-long nails (which do not mix especially well with diaper-changing), ruffles upon ruffles (the look is just not cute on me), or tiny bralette tops that look like actual bras (that ship has sailed, my friends), but there’s so much good fashion to look forward to in the coming months.

(One note, before I show you my favorite fall trends: I was chatting with Francesca the other day about fashion and sustainability and etc etc, and learned that fashion industry comes in second only to oil as one of the globe’s largest polluters. There’s already a lot of great clothing out there in the world, so just a reminder: If you’re looking to reduce your footprint, give shopping at vintage or consignment boutiques a try. Thanks to free shipping and returns, and the fact that you can find like-new designer pieces on sites like TheRealReal, it’s way easier these days to make what’s old new again.)

1/10

Gold Clothing

This fall, I love the idea of pairing sparkling gold pieces (I would like these pants please) with cozy, textured neutrals.

I love absolutely everything about the look pictured above – but mostly how the navy romantic blazer makes that super-feminine metallic skirt dress work for both day and night.

2/10

Stacked Brass Rings

A simpler, more elegant take on the Wear All The Tiny Rings trend that took over these past few years, this look is about filling a single finger with a stack of similar (or identical) chunky rings in a single metal.

(This stack is the one I’m wearing right this very minute, and it’s perfect.)

3/10

Eyeliner In Unexpected Places

OK, I get that the look pictured above is a bit much for everyday wear, but there are subtler ways to try out this trend. One of my favorite things to do to create a dramatic evening eye is to apply liquid eye-liner to the upper lid the traditional way…and then to add an extra little flick angled downwards to the outer edge of the lower lid.

Another idea: Try this reverse wing eyeliner tutorial, which features soft shadow along the upper lid, and then a dramatic line along the lower. It’s so unexpected, and super cool.

4/10

Statement-Making Shirts

I own a variation on the shirt pictured on Kristin Stewart up there, and I love it and wear it everywhere, because it’s a pretty solid distillation of my feelings these days. Is wearing a shirt that makes a statement as meaningful as volunteering your time or your money to a cause? Not even close; please do those things, too (click here for Charity Navigator’s guide to giving in times of crisis). But sometimes it feels really good to let your clothing do the talking for you. (And please make sure that if you purchase one of these message-inclusive t-shirts, you buy it from an organization that donates the profits).

5/10

Smudged Metallic Eye Shadow

Go for a creamy eyeshadow in any metallic shade and smudge it onto your lid, then smudge on some black kohl around the eye for a glamorous, oops-I-forgot-to-take-off-my-makeup-last-night effect. (Keep the rest of your makeup neat and neutral so, you know, you don’t actually look like you just rolled out of bed.)

6/10

Fringed Everything

I own an insane fringe leather jacket that I never wear because it’s insane and fringed, have decided that this season I’m going to get over it and just wear the thing, with whatever.

This is excellent advice, if I do say so myself. Embrace the fringe.

7/10

Shoulder-Duster Earrings

Earrings these length have always felt overwhelming to me – like I need stronger features or something – but I love how I’m seeing them paired this fall with nude, glowy makeup and undone hair. (Bonus points if you go for a chain-link style.)

8/10

Pink Eyes & Cheeks

“But…but…” you say. “Won’t this make me look…contagious?”

Not if you do it right, and you totally can. You can see my dramatic take on the look here; what’s pictured above is a subtler trend that’s less about shock value and more about sweet, subtle prettiness.

9/10

Fancy Pajamas

Yes, this trend was around back in 2011, but STILL. It’s so good, and now, thanks to the incredibly photogenic Zendaya, it’s been updated with sparkles!

I would go out a lot more often if I had a closet full of formal PJs. Just saying.

10/10

Structured Handbags

From massive totes to teeny-tiny clutches, the look right now is stiff and sturdy.

My favorite look is a bag similar to the Dolce & Gabbana Agata purse Taylor Swift carried around everywhere a couple of years ago: simple and gold-accented, with a top handle and clasp…and if you click the “Shop The Look” button up there, it’ll take you to a $40 take on this style.
