Last week I attended the 8th Annual Fashion on Fulton Gala and Charity Event benefiting Brooklyn Community Housing and Services (The BCHS is a 31-year old non-profit agency that provides housing for 700 formerly homeless women, children, and men each year). The event was held at the stunning Skylight One Hanson space in Brooklyn (formally the Williamsburg Savings Bank), a stunning venue with 63-foot ceilings, 40-foot windows, and breathtaking marble decor.
The night started with hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and an awards ceremony, which Heather (a women’s apparel buyer and my plus one) and I just caught the end of due to the rain and a minor directions glitch. We did, however, arrive in time for a performance by the Brooklyn Steppers Marching Band and a fashion show produced by India-Jewel Jackson that highlighted up-and-coming Brooklynite designers including Brooklyn Junior, Better Than Jam, Trudy Miller Layers and Still Hip.
The highlights were Trudy Miller Layers (above left), fashion-forward knit silhouettes customized to suit every woman’s body type, and the family-run Brooklyn Junior (above right), a colorful collection of bright, casual clothing for infants and toddlers. Seriously, too cute!
After the show (and a little champagne and dessert, yum!), I had the pleasure of meeting Felicia Walker Benson of ThisThatBeauty (in red; pictured with me and my enormous glasses). She is a total gem and one heck of a recessionista; I encourage you to check out her blog for some spot-on beauty tips.
Special thanks to Heather (above right) for giving me some fabulous fashion insight…and for gamely making the trek to Brooklyn with me on a very rainy evening.
