I Drank Champagne With Richard Branson (And Other Adventures)

Here is me alone, because I was too shy to ask for a photo with Richard.

Cool, so I now officially have a HUGE crush on Richard Branson. (It’s ok: Kendrick knows, and I think he has a huge crush on Richard Branson, too.) I guess I need to do some catching up on my Virgin lore, because I hadn’t heard the story of how he started his airline before, and it’s a doozy: he got bumped off of a flight on his way to see – and I quote – “a lovely lady friend,” and was so annoyed that he hired a plane, wrote “Virgin Airlines, Flights $39” on a blackboard and wandered around signing up all the other passengers who had been bumped…and then called Boeing the next day to inquire about purchasing a used 747.

THAT IS SO BADASS.

He also is godfather to a baby who was born when one of his Virgin condoms failed, and the girl who ended up getting pregnant wrote him a letter telling him so. He also seems to treat his employees spectacularly well, and is confusingly humble (while of course being completely dashing and charming), and so many of his projects are very specifically geared to – and I mean this literally – saving the world.

Alright. Enough gushing.

The reason I was at this event in the first place was because I was hired to cover the launch of a top-secret new Virgin Mobile plan (that is obviously no longer top-secret as of yesterday morning, when I and the other attendees instagrammed about it), and this post wasn’t part of what I was hired to do, but the information that they revealed at the launch was cool enough that I wanted to share it here, too. Basically, Virgin’s whole ethos has always been “disruption” – shaking up big businesses by simply doing things better – and now they’re attempting to do this to the mobile industry.

What they announced at the launch: Going forward, Virgin Mobile will be offering one phone (the iPhone, simply because they determined that it was the best), and one plan ($50 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data). When you purchase or upgrade your phone, you get six months of service for $1, and if you do this before July 31st of this year, you get twelve months of service for $1. And you also get all sorts of fun extras – a bonus night at a Virgin hotel, a companion ticket on a Virgin Atlantic flight, discounts on Virgin wines, etc. This sounds, to me, like a no-brainer.
