One of the nicer things about living in a cute little antique-y East Coast town is that it’s relatively easy to convince even the most die-hard city-dwellers to board the MetroNorth and come say hi. We lure them with promises of home-cooked meals, fall foliage, and fire pits, and in October we get to add on the fact that Sleepy Hollow (as in Washington Irving/Headless Horseman) is right next door…which means that we have access to lots and lots of fun Halloween-themed stuff.
On Sunday night, our friends Brian and Lauren journeyed north for a double date that we booked through HowAboutWe for Couples’ Concierge Service, and we wanted to make sure it was worth the trip.
First stop: our house, for the aforementioned home-cooked meal (pork tenderloin with gorgonzola sauce, baby greens with goat cheese and walnuts, garlic-sauteed string beans, banana bread, chocolate ice cream with sea salt, yum yum yum).
Next stop: the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Oooooo. (HowAboutWe arranged our tour, so literally all we had to do was print out the tickets and show up.)

The tour was a two-hour ramble through a pitch-black cemetery while carrying old-fashioned lanterns. It was actually respectably child-appropriate (I’d say ages 8 and up would be fine), but if scary is your thing make sure you go for the Murder Mayhem Lantern Tour, which is basically the standard lantern tour…with the addition of terrifying people in costumes jumping out at you.
Post-tour, we regrouped at one of my favorite spots in Tarrytown, the Setback Inn, for pool, beers, and a little ridiculousness.
As a final touch for our Brooklynite friends, the HowAboutWe for Couples Concierge also arranged for a car service so that they could skip the MetroNorth/subway situation once the night came to a close. How nice is that?!
The whole thing was up there with my most fun Date Nights ever.
