Love this idea from newlywed reader Juliette!
“I got married on March 27th of this year and my husband and I also didn’t want a traditional guest book. Instead, we bought a large canvas from Michael’s (only about $20), painted it purple (one of our wedding colors), and painted our wedding date (3/27/2010) in Roman numerals. As guests walked in for the ceremony, the canvas was right in the entryway on an easel and the guests signed their names and messages in a black sharpie. It turned out so beautiful and unique and is now hanging in our bedroom!”
Another take on this idea: buy a silkscreened canvas with a simple piece of art (at left, “I’ll Fly Away,” $63) that you think is evocative of the feel of your wedding, and encourage guests to print their messages right on the image.
