The Mom Uniform: Autumn Edition

Let's throw it back to 2019, when I wrote a post that is 2020 in a nutshell if I've ever seen one. (Updated with brand-new outfit suggestions.)

Today's post is a twofer, inspired by a couple of reader questions I received via Insta.

  1. Does comfort and style exist? Can you wear yoga pants but still be stylish? and
  2. I need a Mom Uniform for fall; help me.

The answer to the first question is a resounding "yes," and am certain that it is so, because otherwise I would be naked. There is just no power on earth (except for, perhaps, the possibility of a date with Jason Momoa) that could get me out of the house attired in clothing that makes me feel restricted in any way.

In Which I Answer My Own Question About Leggings

Me, 2 years ago, in The Leggings That Died

I'm doing a much better job of getting dressed these days. Meaning: I actually do it! Regularly! First thing in the morning! It's not because I *want* to, exactly; it's because the kids' new school is...well, have you seen Big Little Lies? It's like that.

As an example: On our third day, I had a woman come up to me and ask me whether I owned a pair of oversize round Tom Ford sunglasses.

Dressing Room Try-On: Madewell Fall 2019

Alright, folks, apparently we have a new feature: The Dressing Room Try-On. I spontaneously did one of these at Everlane the other day, and it seems you guys were into it, hooray! ...But honestly? I think I was into it even more. It just felt like a throwback old-school blogging - you know, the kind I've been all nostalgic about lately - where everything isn't glittery and perfect and staged. It's just fun.

(I had fun.)

Madewell is one of those brands that I forget I love until I go into one of their stores, and then find myself wanting everything. Alas, it's also priced slightly above my "Everything" budget, so I had to keep the actual purchase to One Of The Things (scroll down to see which one I went for), but still: It was all so good.

Four Perfect (And Affordable) Basics Your Fall Wardrobe Absolutely Needs

This is not an ad for Everlane. But it might as well be.

A few years ago, when Everlane first launched, they did a little blogger-seeding, and I ended up on the receiving end of one of their leather tote bags and a black turtleneck. The pieces were good - very good, even - but they never made the leap into constant rotation for me, and even though I poked around on Everlane's site from time to time, this tank top is the only piece I ever bought from them.

It's not that I didn't like Everlane's stuff - I am all about great basics, and am super on board with their ethos - but even given my generally positive experiences with the brand, I never really trusted that their direct-to-consumer (and thus surprisingly affordable) prices could come along with truly top-tier quality across the board. As an example, I didn't feel like the sold-out-everywhere Petra tote that I owned (and ended up giving to a friend) would be one of those leather items that ends up looking even better over time; I thought it might be more of a flash-in-the-pan thing.

So You Need A New Tote Bag?

Me + baby-to-be + Upper East Side rooftop + tote bag, sixteen lifetimes ago.

I do not, myself, have much use for tote bags these days (save for the Louis Vuitton NeverFull, which I despise myself for wanting with the heat of a thousand suns, but so be it). I need all of my arms free and clear for child-wrangling, and totes have a tendency to fall off of shoulders at the exact moment that you wish they wouldn't, like when you're mid-airport and carrying your stuff, your children's stuff, your children, and a full grocery store's worth of Einstein Bagels (BUT NOT THE ONES WITH SESAME SEEDS. God forbid a sesame seed cross my daughter's lips; there will be hell to pay, and it will be Mom who pays it).

But in service to those of you out there who feel differently about this topic and are search of a good tote for fall, I thought I'd answer the below reader question, and do a little online shopping of the tote bag sort.
