Me with Pam, our hostess for the evening.

Let me explain how I know Pam: I don’t, exactly (or, I didn’t until last night). In a series of odd coincidences, a friend sent her my lamp refurbish video, and she noticed that the street I am standing on in the beginning is her own street. She then noticed that her friend, Stephen, whom she hadn’t been in touch with for some time, was in the video with me, and put two and two together: both Stephen and I live directly across the street from her. Small world.

Anyway, she very sweetly invited all of us to her party, and I am so glad she did: she’s an event planner, and you could certainly tell from how seamlessly she planned the entire evening.

Last night I went to one of the strangest parties I’ve ever been to. It was also one of the most fun. A few guests (myself included) were assigned to be “team captains,” and we were told to invite another guest (my guest, obviously, was Kendrick) and choose a team theme/costume. Ours was Christmas Caesars (or, as Kendrick dubbed us, Yuletitus Andronicus), mostly because I thought a toga sounded like a pretty easy costume and I’ve never worn one before.

For a first-time toga-er, I did a fairly good rigging job, no? In retrospect, though, I would have made my life easier had I gone to tieatoga.com (yes, that site exists), which describes basic methods.

(By the way, Lucy down there is wearing one of Aunt Julia’s gifts! Too cute.)

Yesterday afternoon I met author Suzanne Guillette at Les Halles, on Park Avenue. I reviewed Suzanne’s debut memoir, Much to Your Chagrin, earlier this year, and she and I have been corresponding via email for a bit, so we decided it was time to, you know, take the next step. After reading her book I felt that I knew her already, and she was just as lovely and engaging as I had imagined she would be.

Les Halles, by the way, is one of my favorite restaurants to meet at for a late-afternoon drink: it’s quiet and elegant, the waiters and bartenders are super-friendly, and the martinis are the size of small boats. (I also have a minor obsession with Anthony Bourdain, who used to run the kitchen there, and I must admit that a small part of me hopes that he’ll come strolling through the door in search of some of their famous french fries.)

Admission: I hate quiche. And yet I could eat this one all day long.

When I’m fussing around the house on a cold day but want to feel a little less schlubby than usual, I pair solid-color bottoms like these (ooh, love) with a loose, preferably off-the-shoulder sweater like the Miss Sixty version pictured above. Actually, one of my favorite sweaters to wear this way is the (very old) DKNY version I wore on Thanksgiving morning.

Some other off-the-shoulder sweaters I like: this one and this one.

And just because we’re talking about off-the-shoulder-ness (my favorite look), please check out this incredible Banana Republic cowl-neck mini, which I found on my internet travels this morning.
