I also painted an antique desk I bought off of CraigsList for $25 (remember to remove the drawers first when painting desks/dressers) and my parents’ old Crate & Barrel chair. I think Rachel Ashwell would be proud.

(I found those conch shells on the floor of the ocean in the Cayman Islands on my first scuba diving trip, when I was twelve years old. I think it’s illegal to take them back to the US now, but back then you could pay a duty for each shell you brought home. They’ve gotten sun-faded over the years, but are still some of my favorite decorative pieces.)

Monday night, Morgan invited me over to the beautiful apartment that she shares with her brand-new fiance, Tyler, for some burritos and reality TV (our boys were both working). I brought a jar of homemade butternut squash soup (recipe to come) that my mom had given me earlier in the day. This is us having some trouble with the self-timer on my new camera.

I swear, we dressed like the Bobbsey Twins (matching plaid shirts and black leggings) completely by accident.

This is my Halloween solution for those of you who don’t want to dress up/feel silly in a full-on costume, but still want to participate a bit: Venetian masks. They’re gorgeous, and run the gamut from simple to striking.
