Guess what arrived in the mail while I was away? If you guessed a Jury Summons, you’d be right…but I’m much more excited about Arthur Schwartz’s Jewish Home Cooking. My aunt Debbie makes delicious Jewish meals, but since we don’t get to see my dad’s side of the family very often, I decided it was high time I learned how to make my own latkes.

Some other dishes I’m excited to learn how to make:

- Potato Kugel

- Borscht

While at Selfridges, I stopped by the James Knight of Mayfair Fishmonger, and discovered that Jamie Oliver’s crew was en route to film a segment. Naturally, I decided to ask them if they’d be willing to participate in a little impromptu “Domestic Bliss” episode, and David very graciously consented, with Mark acting as cameraman. James Knight also has a retail location in Notting Hill and is the fishmonger to the queen (!).

In the video (which will be up within a few days), David shows me around the stand and explains how to pick everything from the best prawns to the best baby octopus. He was a blast, and I think you’ll really love this episode. Stay tuned!

On my last day in London, I woke up sick. Just in time to spend six or so hours on a plane…because that always makes you feel better. I’m not a huge fan of pills (although I have an extremely busy rest of the week and might be partaking in the NyQuil), so I was wondering…

At Selfridges, I discovered the (slightly unfortunately named) Vom Fass stand, which I thought was an inspired gift idea.

First, you sample their extensive collection of oils, vinegars, wines, and spirits, which includes unusual options like porcino oil and blueberry liqueur with grappa (that’s what I’m sampling above). Next, you select a bottle (which can be personalized) from a wide range of styles and sizes, which is filled with your selection. You’re welcome to keep the bottle and come back to have it refilled for a moderate price.

While Vom Fass products are only currently available in the U.K., I love the idea of bottling house-made oils and liqueurs. Why not try bottling up some pineapple vodka infusions for your loved ones this Christmas?
