Rugs And An Oops

In today's Most Random Thing Ever, I am now completely obsessed with Persian rugs. I remember my mom had an old blue and grey one when I was growing up, and I think at some point she asked me if I wanted it for my apartment, and I was all ewwwww that's so booooooring and oooooold (or something similarly obnoxious).

Oops.

Anyway, I now I regret that statement. Mom, if you are reading and still own the thing:

All Things Gold & Faux

You may have noticed that I have a slight thing for faux animal heads. And for gold. And sometimes, in a perfect storm of odd home décor choices, those two obsessions come together into an item so exactly me that I might as well tattoo it onto the center of my forehead.

(Come on. You love it too.)

The gloriousness pictured above is part of a collection I put together on eBay called Walk On The Wild Side, which also features antler-rimmed mirrors, faux sheepskin throws, and a white resin elephant head. I would decorate my entire house this way if I could, and if this choice wouldn’t likely send Kendrick fleeing into the woods to live with someone who doesn’t think that gazing at a glitter moose head is a nice way to spend an evening.

If A Pumpkin Were A Living Room

For today's edition of free-association fun, let's talk pumpkins and living rooms.

I've never really been into those weird, bumpy, twisty-looking pumpkins - they always look creepy and diseased to me; I'll go for classic round-and-orange, thanks. But these sage-and-rose gourds that I spotted at the pumpkin patch last weekend (more on this tomorrow, because if you haven't been yet this weekend is your last chance) were so pretty that I was tempted to pick up the whole lot for my front porch.

I didn't, because weird and twisty pumpkins are also weirdly and twistily expensive, but I kept thinking about those colors, and how much I love the pairing in the home. If you add in dark wood and gold accents, what you end up with is kind of a 1970s Palm Springs resort mixed with a glitzy ski lodge kind of look...

Quick Fix: Entryway Update

I spent a decent percentage of this weekend in exactly this position.

One project I've been putting off (and off and off) has been repainting the very chipped wood entryway to our house, partially because when I brought in a contractor to look at our floors he told me that they were so old and worn that they wouldn't stand up to the kind of sanding you'd need to do to get a really fresh-looking paint job (that's why we ended up replacing the floors in our living room entirely, leaving this spot in the entryway alone because it wasn't in quiiite as bad shape)...and partially because I couldn't figure out a multi-hour period during which I'd be able to prevent all the small creatures in our house from making adorable little permanent track-marks across the floors before they dried.

But then I realized: 1) I don't really care if the entryway looks perfect; I'd just like it to look better, and 2) When it comes to small creatures and DIY projects, there really is no good time. So on Friday night we got our son into bed, made sure our dogs looked reasonably passed-out on the couch, and broke out the black gloss.
