10 Decor Tips That Pinterest Taught Me

Pinterest's primary function in my life is to make me realize that I am wildly inadequate in virtually every area of my existence. Mostly in my ability to artfully light and photograph my dinner, but I have also learned that many, many things about me are lacking, from my nail polish application skills to my window treatments to the fact that I persist in buying Ben & Jerry's rather than churning my own mixed-berry frozen yogurt in a crate that I hand-crafted from toothpicks, pom poms and dreams.

But another thing that Pinterest has taught me is actually quite a lot about home decor. I've always been a big believer in letting your freak flag fly when it comes to your home, filling it up with things that aren't just "pretty," but remind you of the places and people and things you love the most - that have actual stories - but still: sometimes it helps to take a step back, examine what's around you, and look for the simple little fixes that can make an enormous difference.

Let's discuss.

Interior Inspiration: Six Nurseries You Need To See

Here is Goldie's room. It's almost identical to the nursery we put together for her back in Westchester (minus the leopard carpet, TEAR) - we even painted it the exact same shade of pale green that we chose during the office-to-nursery redo. I kept it super simple because it also functions as a guest room when people come to stay with us (that couch folds down into a queen-size bed), and also because I figure we have plenty of years of pink sparkle explosions ahead of us without getting started now. (It needs a rug. I'll get on that sometime in the next decade.)

But!

Were I starting from scratch with a nursery concept...ooooooh are the ones pictured here ever good. (They're good for kids' rooms, too, so I'm bookmarking 'em for a future redo.)

It’s A Very Tiki Holiday

Everyone has those friends who make you want to just follow them around all day to see how, exactly, it is that they do life so damn well. For me, that's Stephen and Dave. You've been hearing about them for years now, ever since I started blogging - they're Kendrick's best friends from college, so we've known them forever, but we also lived in the same building for a few years and had some epic rooftop adventures. And then they moved to the West Coast and we thought, cool, let's do that too. (Kidding, but only sort of.)

Every time I go to their apartment - an industrial-style loft in San Francisco - I need to photograph it; it's just that well-done. The most interesting thing about it, though, is that every time I visit, I notice that it looks even better than the last time, but not because they've added stuff...it's usually, rather, that they've taken stuff away. Pared it all down.

Oh.

Aspen House

Black and white photograph in front of fireplace with holiday decorations

{ Thanksgiving Eve with my girls (and a boy) }

I have to tell you: when you've lived in New York City, Westchester, and Boston for the majority of your years, it is extremely difficult to get into the holiday spirit while literally sweating (and not because you're wearing your wooly Ugly Christmas Sweater; because it is 75 degrees outside).

Now, to be clear, I'm not complaining; I'm pretty excited about the fact that this winter will most likely not include death-defying highway trips, gnome-slaying trees and frantic Googling of the words "How To Unfreeze Your Pipes." REALLY psyched about all of that. But still: I need my Christmas to feel cozy and wintry. Fortunately, one of the little oddities of our house is that the living room is kind of small and dark (made to feel way larger by the office conversion, but still), and has these amazing exposed beams, so the overall effect is kind of Aspen cabin-y. And while the vibe is mildly disconcerting in the context of a California summer, once you add a Christmas tree and a fireplace, it's totally the Holiday House of my dreams.
